I've seen the Toyota Diesel P/u's in both Australia and Europe. 35 MPG in the Hiway.

My protest here continues, I'll keep my 1992 4X4 with 171,000 miles until Toyota sells a Diesel. I painted mine and put shocks on it this year.....It can last forever.......

I had an '84 Mitsu turbodiesel pickup in highschool.... i loved that thing. It was done in by a worn out fuel pump and turbo. In retrospect, I should have bit the bullet and kept the truck, but at the time $1000 seemed like too much to spend on a $500 vehicle.

Amen to that. A 30 MPG diesel pickup would sell like crazy over here. Much like Ford selling better cars in Europe than the USA, I don't get it.

By the way, Oz gets the best Toyota truck offerings. Want a solid axle Land Cruiser with a factory snorkel? They have multiple options, including one with a truck bed.

The Mahindra should start selling any day now. Smallish, diesel, 30mpg, and ugly as a mud fence.

They said that about Japanese cars.. We shall shall see how well these Mahindras work out.

A basic diesel pick-up with good economy may find a market.

I see a few of their tractors in dairy country. Apparently, they are FIAT designs and quite reliable.

I've seen diesel Toyota pickups, but they are rare. There was a really clean 1985 4WD for sale a couple of years ago.

Also, Toyota has been calling their pickup trucks "Hiluxes" since the 1970s. IIRC, my factory service manual for my 1983 said "Hilux" on the front. It's nothing new.

i actually had to help a driver move a couple of diesel hilux(es) in cambodia. i didnt get very fast, but the thing was a torque monster. two of them caravan us into the jungle. AC blasting, dodging the most effed up road construction, and traffic the entire way. the rig is nice. i wish i could have driven a bit on the open road.

Yep, I bought a rustbucket '85 Toyota 4wd and swapped the engine into my 1990 4runner. Bolt-in swap in any 22re toyoter. Wiring is as simple as it gets... 12v to the fuel cutoff, 12v to the glow plugs and 12v to the solenoid.

Mine had a cracked head though, unbenownst to me. They are prone to it, as I learned in my typical post-purchase research.

Parts are rare in Canada and the US, so if you are left needing anything, you can be sidelined for quite a while. Took me 5 months to find a decend used head for $600... cost me $130 to have it shipped from South Carolina. Arrived Christmas eve... Mrs Notfarnow wouldn't let me put it under the tree!

Rumor has it that Toyota is bringing a small "ish" Turbo Diesel to the US for the Tundra... 23 mpg city and highway..

Just look at the freaking Land Cruisers they get in Oz.

I'd also love one of these with the turbodiesel 4.0 V8.
