out with the old, in with the new: new shop
im in the process or tearing down my old shop, well, not much of shop with that big bunker in the middle of it. it is currently 20x32. my plan is to make it 24 by 32, close in the carport it is attached to and make the carport another garage just for parking cars. the new gargage will be for the porsche, wood working and general work. the way it is laid out is, off the house i have a 2 car carport then next is the old shop. the carport is open front and back and i want to close it in with 2 gaage doors on the front and one 16ft door on the back. it is the only way i could figure out how to use the 16ft door on the garage on the other end of the house. the other garage will be converted to a room for my mom. yeah
![]() the new garage will have one 9ft door on the same side as the other 2 doors but i am thinking of adding another 9ft door between the new garage and the carport. that way i can work between the to and have a big opening. any thoughts? too embarassed to show pics of the carport. a lot of the crap from the old shop is in there, along with the 911. here are some pics of the demolition. i have more pics. but later. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Neat horse, but I am more intrigued with the bunker! Was that a 1950's version of a survival shelter (above ground)? I recall the old Life and Look magazines of the late 50's early 60's and the articles on building a "nuclear attack shelter" in your basement. Myrtle Beach? - could not have been built for tornado's, certainly not hurricanes..............fascinating.
Nothing beats kids on horses, especially riding along the beach. Beautiful. ![]() Bob |

i call it the bunker. it was used as a freezer. the PO was a big deer hunter. the walls are about 8" thick plus insulation..
i was told it came from the military base many years ago. it may have even been used as an ammo storage shelter for all i know. BTW, its free to anyone that can get it off my property! the little girl next door came over and asked where are we going to go for huricanes and tornados now.

Not to hijack the thread but a friend of mine and I are buying some land in the middle of the desert, NW of Phoenix. It has a honest to God bomb shelter on the place, as does 4-5 other places in that area.
We did some research on this and it turns out that the housing development was started in the late 1950's and early 1960's and many people opted for this shelter due to the Cold War looming over everyone. Its made out of concrete and large enough to sleep 4 people on bunk beds very comfortably and more if you are forced into it. Small kitchen, head, and large storage areas for food. The door is very heavy and metal, and seals up the place very well. Three locks on it make it so you are not going to get in unless you have a torch or the keys. Its a very nice place to store things that you want to make sure will be there when you get home. Right now tools and long term food are stored there.

when i was a kid, i was at my uncles in memphis. i remember going to see a bomb shelter someone had.
if this was used for ammo storage, i would think the roof, although concrete, would be weak so that if something inside exploded, the blast would go up. you could put bunk beds in this and sleep 4 easily. now that it may have multiple uses, the price is doubled.

Dave,
Do not have any right now of the bomb shelter. Will get some and post them to this thread. Here is one of the general area. The bomb shelter is just beyond the house in the middle, buried in the "front yard" so that its difficult to see. ![]() This was taken standing on a hill on the edge of the place looking down to the house.

Tim, See the path or road going from left upper to right in this picture? Already got permission to widen and smooth it for a taildragger. Paced it off at just at 1500 feet, more than enough.

T77911, I think you should keep the bunker and use it as a large storage closet/safe to lock valuables in.

Tim,
We will keep the bunker and use it to store all sorts of things in, and frankly keep it as a bunker just in case we need a BUNKER to store our a$$es in sometime!

here is the latest. this has been a nightmare to say the least. this guy gave me a bid of $2k to demo. when i emailed him, i did not hear from him so i got anouther bid, $1600. i was happy and i felt better about this guy. i flet like he had the resources to do the job. then the orginal guy called me and i told him i found someone else. he aske the price and i told him, then he said he would do it 1400 so i said ok. he came out with this small trak ho, he took care of the slab fast, but broke his machine on the bunker. they came back monday with a bigger machine. it would not even scratch it. so i told him if he could bury it, he could, but he better make sure he can get it below grade.
well, here are some pics.

i hit the submit button, not the pics button.
![]() ![]() i got worried that it was not going anyfurther down. but i think now it is close to grade. i could not stand to be there anymore so i went to work. i called a concrete guy last night that is working next door at the judges house. he came by this morning and looked at the job. he gave me a bid of $4100 to pour a 24x32 pad with footers. it may be a tad high, but i can live with it. i will let him deal with the rest of the bunker and the crator.
