Checking out an 81 CJ5

Yeah--like I need another vehicle. The Rover is gone, and I replaced it with a 96 Jeep Cherokee Country for the wife--(I love the old Cherokees, I had an 88 and a 91 that were great). So as I was checking out craigslist, a pretty nice 81 CJ5 10 blocks away popped up--he lists tons of recent work and the body looks nice--esp. for this area. It is a Renegade with new tires, clucth TO bearing, bestop w/doors, seat covers, everything works, etc. etc. for 3300.00.

The only negative is that it has the 151 CI engine.

am I crazy? what do you guys think of the CJs? I know the 7 is "better" because of the wheelbase and other upgrades, but I think this would be another fun toy for winter and summer

The 151 engine does ok off road if you don't go too large on the tires. On the road it is definitely an around town car. Not happy at all on the highway.

$3300 is a decent price for it if it isn't rusted out.

for an 81 that thing looks great. Make sure you check all over the frame. they are real bad about rusting. Especially the rear half around the wheel arch.

i always liked the 5's better...my 72 had a 304ci v8 in it. you got 10mpg no matter what, city, hwy, 160miles and your are out of gas.
after getting the subbie stuck in the mud this weekend i would go for that in a heartbeat....6" clearence and 12" ruts dont mix.

but a good old jeep for under $4k is unheard of on the left coast
