"The 18 Ah lithium ion battery will cost €1,904 in Germany including the 19% value-added-tax. Interestingly, when ordered, the car comes with the standard battery as well as the lithium ion. That's because in cold temperatures (below freezing), the lead battery has to be put back in the car, because the lithium performance drops off too much. "

I use lithiun polymer batts in my r/c trucks.......do the lion batts have the same fire hazard if discharged completely?

You guys skipped right over one thing.
19% VAT (value added tax) that is added on EVERYTHING you buy. It was 17% when I was there and it killed us. We need to keep it from ever being rammed down our throats here.

Sure it's a little spendy, but of course for a race team, the weight savings will be worth the cost, and technology will trickle down.
By the way, what is the weight? Edit - 13 lbs.

I'd bet that they are LiFePoly compound batteries, which do not have the same explosion/fire hazard as normal lithium-ion.
