does PPOT, have a "miss manners" dept?

i have already apologized. profusely.

i went to eat lunch with 3 other co-workers. we all ate the same thing for the most part. came to $12 each. we all reached for our money, and one of my friends said, "i got you. i owe you lunch"..so i put my money away.

$12 each included the proper tip for the server. so a total of $48. my friend had no cash and put it all on his card, and collect the cash from the other two..he still refused my money. he then proceeds to eff up the math, and screw the lady from a decent tip.

i chimed in. he got pissed because everyone else said, "hey, if you are going to stiff her, give me some cash back!" he gave back some cash, which was put back into the pile for tip.

friend was pissed at me for putting his crappy math, ****ty tipping..whatever in the spotlight.

again, i apologized. i think it should have been none of my biz, since i wasnt paying. what says the group?

I think he's making a big deal out of nothing. I've been in similar lunch situations, and when somebody gets called out on something like that, we usually just chalk it up to a mistake, fix it, and then proceed to make fun of it. it's all taken with a grain of salt.

I just hope he doesn't have anything to do with math, engineering, and high-explosives.

If he owed you a lunch. . . did you stiff the waitress when you last paid?

Yeah, he deserved to at least STFU should you decide to add to the tip.

A bunch of us used to eat at this cheap place. It was $4.00 for lunch so you could get by with leaving a $5 and being OK with the wait staff.

One day one of the guys needs to use his card. There are 6 of us, so 5 guys toss him $5 and he goes up front to pay. He comes back all happy like because he didn't need to use his card after all, there was enough cash to cover the bill.

Man were we pissed. He was going to use the tip to pay for his own lunch.
That did not end well for him... :-)

Same here...

I even had an acquaintance that was a notorious cheep skate and a control freak... always tried to collect the money and pay the bill... and short the waiter.

Whenever we went out with him I would just lag (run to the restroom) so I was last to leave and slip a reasonable tip to the waiter.

Often known as the "Hollywood three way." Guy collects cash from others, pockets it, pays the tab on his card and writes the whole meal off. (Probably bnot what your buddy was doing)

Best way to handle those situations is to offer for you and the other guys to leave the tip...as in "OK...well we'll leave the tip. What's the tab? $40...so that's what, $3-4 from each of us?"

Wife is in the restaurant business. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out.

Women parties are the worst...they'll break out calculators to get it down to the penny when splitting a tab.

And guys...round your tip up to the next dollar at least.

As far as calling him on it...fuggedaboudit. He neeeded to hear that. No biggie especially if it was in good humour.

Right, I used to bartend. I never tip just 15% unless the service is borderline bad. For good service, I'll tip anywhere from 20-50%. If I go out for lunch and spend $8, but the waitress stops by several times, I'll tip $3-5. As the tab goes up, my tip comes down to reasonable levels.

He does know that servers are paid less than $3/hour in most places, right?
