Darwin wins again!

Survivorman fan found dead in Muskoka wilderness - thestar.com

widgeon13 03-04-2010 01:18 PM

Wonder how far he was from actual civilization? It's pretty easy to go from hypothermia and not particularly painful so perhaps he thought he was having fun until it was TOO FREAKIN late.

911Freak 03-04-2010 01:20 PM

Sad...

Stupid, yes, but still devastating for his family...

Sheesh, learning survival skills from a TV show...

GH85Carrera 03-04-2010 01:21 PM

I can't imagine that watching TV makes anyone think they really know how to do something, except watch TV.

Thats like learning to be a Porsche mechanic off the inner net......Oh wait a minute:(

Talewinds 03-04-2010 01:36 PM

Oh man, for a second there I read right past the word "fan", glad to know it wasn't Les Stroud.
Neither television, nor books, nor formal classes can replace sound decision making in the backcountry.

teenerted1 03-04-2010 01:53 PM

materials he brought, which included a multi-tool, an axe, matches, a lighter, an emergency blanket, fishing tools, a compass, a survival book, maps and some cash. He did not use a cellphone.

Code was last seen wearing beige cargo pants, a dark jacket, hiking boots and a black “Yukon”-style hat.

Det. Const. Jeff Emms said Code was no “rookie” when it came to outdoor adventuring and clearly prepared for his trip. But at the same time, such survivor excursions have officers like him “scratching our heads.”

i dont see any preparing for this trip....the point of the show is to show you some what to do ifyou are CAUGHT in a survival situation. not that you go into the wilderness without the propper gear.

as a 12yr old in boy scouts on my first winter camping trip i had more sence that this Darwin.

Heel n Toe 03-04-2010 03:08 PM

Harry Hogge: What do you know about stock car racing?
Cole Trickle: Well... watched it on television, of course.
Harry Hogge: You've seen it on television?
Cole Trickle: ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.
Harry Hogge: I'm sure I would.

If his family sues the "Survivorman" show, I'm just gonna puke.

I could survive on that.... No problemo......

Tishabet 03-04-2010 04:57 PM

I know I've posted here in the past about my experiences with hypothermia (I'm an Eagle scout with lots of winter camping experience, former mountaineering guide and have also done wilderness search and rescue) and I will try to dig up my old post on hypothermia, but it boils down to: people can become hypothermic quickly and without realizing it, and hypothermic people will often act completely irrationally and do absolutely insane things (e.g. take off their remaining clothing).
Without knowing anything further about this guy's case in particular, I'd say the first and most significant mistake he made was not having a buddy.

porsche4life 03-04-2010 05:49 PM

Good point Grant...

But I wanna know why this guy didn't establish shelter and fire ASAP? He had a blanket.... with shelter, fire, and a blanket he should have never froze to death....

vash 03-04-2010 05:57 PM

wow, sucky. i have been lost...i almost panicked. he had enough on him to survive a night.

i simple shelter and fire can really boost confidence.

Buckterrier 03-04-2010 06:08 PM

Mother Nature is a cruel lady. And some folks have no respect for her.

red-beard 03-04-2010 06:16 PM

Nature is a mother...

M.D. Holloway 03-04-2010 07:00 PM

I like the show...in a warm home.

porsche4life 03-04-2010 07:38 PM

Actually..... IF you know what you are doing... Shelter... fire... Survive.... any climate is surviveable with those two.....

porsche4life 03-04-2010 07:45 PM

depends how good your shelter is....

But -13c isn't that cold in all reality... stop the wind(shelter) build fire... stay near fire...

This guy was just a dumbass though.... No reason to be out in that really....

syncroid 03-04-2010 07:57 PM

The subject line of the post is misleading. I thought that Les Stroud was the one whom passed. Sorry to hear of anyones passing. Mr. Code, R.I.P.

Geronimo '74 03-04-2010 08:55 PM

How is it misleading?
It does say survivorman FAN does it not?

This guy was not too bright thinking that he got Les' skills from watching TV...
I feel for his family, they are left behind.

(Les Stroud RULES, Bear Grills is though too, but more of a thrillseeker. His show is more about eating disgusting things...)

I did learn English from watching TV.
No dubbing here, only subtitles.

Learning English is one of the things that is possible. Just don't expect real life to be remotely like anything seen on American TV.

I watched the 24 hours of Daytona. I can be a race car driver.

flatbutt 03-05-2010 06:55 AM

even with a snow hole he was going to have a problem in those conditions. heavy wet snow makes finding fuel for a fire a real problem. what did he figure on eating for a week? fish? sorry for his family but this guy was a dope, killed by his own arrogance.

svandamme 03-05-2010 12:10 PM

hell, i can survive snow... i've done so many times before
the solution is actually quite simple, go to the Apres-Ski pub, and get wasted.

I've gotten pretty extensive survival training in the military.

A lot of what you see on survivorman is absolutely rock solid advice and could very well save your life.

Sydney...are you forgetting the boy scout motto? Seems to me this guy didn't follow it.

a bivy sack and sleeping bag would have added a couple of pounds and potentially saved his live. He could have still dug his snow cave and had his "survivor" moment. I am fine with minimalistic but the guy was nuts for going out alone unprepared.
