Wonder how far he was from actual civilization? It's pretty easy to go from hypothermia and not particularly painful so perhaps he thought he was having fun until it was TOO FREAKIN late.

Sad...

Stupid, yes, but still devastating for his family...

Sheesh, learning survival skills from a TV show...

I can't imagine that watching TV makes anyone think they really know how to do something, except watch TV.

Oh man, for a second there I read right past the word "fan", glad to know it wasn't Les Stroud.
Neither television, nor books, nor formal classes can replace sound decision making in the backcountry.

materials he brought, which included a multi-tool, an axe, matches, a lighter, an emergency blanket, fishing tools, a compass, a survival book, maps and some cash. He did not use a cellphone.

Code was last seen wearing beige cargo pants, a dark jacket, hiking boots and a black “Yukon”-style hat.

Det. Const. Jeff Emms said Code was no “rookie” when it came to outdoor adventuring and clearly prepared for his trip. But at the same time, such survivor excursions have officers like him “scratching our heads.”

i dont see any preparing for this trip....the point of the show is to show you some what to do ifyou are CAUGHT in a survival situation. not that you go into the wilderness without the propper gear.

as a 12yr old in boy scouts on my first winter camping trip i had more sence that this Darwin.

Harry Hogge: What do you know about stock car racing?
Cole Trickle: Well... watched it on television, of course.
Harry Hogge: You've seen it on television?
Cole Trickle: ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.
Harry Hogge: I'm sure I would.

I know I've posted here in the past about my experiences with hypothermia (I'm an Eagle scout with lots of winter camping experience, former mountaineering guide and have also done wilderness search and rescue) and I will try to dig up my old post on hypothermia, but it boils down to: people can become hypothermic quickly and without realizing it, and hypothermic people will often act completely irrationally and do absolutely insane things (e.g. take off their remaining clothing).
Without knowing anything further about this guy's case in particular, I'd say the first and most significant mistake he made was not having a buddy.

Good point Grant...

But I wanna know why this guy didn't establish shelter and fire ASAP? He had a blanket.... with shelter, fire, and a blanket he should have never froze to death....

The subject line of the post is misleading. I thought that Les Stroud was the one whom passed. Sorry to hear of anyones passing. Mr. Code, R.I.P.

How is it misleading?
It does say survivorman FAN does it not?

This guy was not too bright thinking that he got Les' skills from watching TV...
I feel for his family, they are left behind.

(Les Stroud RULES, Bear Grills is though too, but more of a thrillseeker. His show is more about eating disgusting things...)
