Best SUV for Zombie times @ $20K or less?

Requirements

- 4WD
- Very dependable
- Off road rugged with good street manners
- Decent MPG
- Easy to service
- Good parts availability
- $20K or less

It will be a daily driver so it must be comfortable with good creature comforts. It will take frequent 3 day weekend camping/MTB trips. Weekdays for downtown/freeway driving and must show well for commercial real estate meetings and tours. If the world implodes, I want to pack it up and head for the hills. Talk amongst...

I wanna be the first in the group: 90's 4runner.

mid 90's Landcruiser if you can hack the mileage- but then again they are cheap enough it may not matter..

Or a later model Chevy Tahoe AKA "Hoe"

For zombie time, I suggest that with $20K you could buy about 10 '80's era GMC Suburbans, pre 1986, carbureted. The original "Militia Mobile."

But maybe in the 4wd Syncro version. ...but do get the RPG access-roof option. --popular with Afghans .. . as are the Toyota trucks.

Around here they can't sell those things. People crush 'em.. Wouldn't mind having one myself with a lift.

(Then I need to grow a mullet )

The great thing about the GM rigs is that everyone knows that they really don't have brakes. ...so running over zombies should be easily accepted . .expected behavior in one of those.

80 Series (like mine)

100 Series

LC comes closest, but MPG is an issue. I really like the new FJ, but again MPG is no beeno.

I'm going to have to plug my Excursion here. Yeah its huge, but from the factory its got a 44 gallon fuel tank. I can go just about 800 miles on one tank at highway speeds. Its got plenty of room inside and its a Ford F250 with a topper basically, so parts are super plentiful and not very expensive.

I'd definitely want an American truck, as there are more of them around, for zombie time and all.

I also use mine as my dd during the winter months.

Unimog! But you can't go very fast in those, unless you change the gearing which defeats the purpose of one. Plus registration may get tricky.

I'd say Land Cruiser, but dump the I-6 and swap in the 5.7 I-Force from the new Tundras

you know why I like American (esp. GM)? Every hick knows how to work on them- the "technology" is so familiar you don't need a specialist.

Where I live even the little kids know how to tear into GM products-we're talking about generations of families that are real DIY guys, working on them is 2nd nature to some of these guys.

My 2002 s10 could blow the hood right off and between myself and my friends in the neighborhood I'll bet I can get it back on the road without taking it to any shop for less than what the average guy pays for a tuneup at the dealer.

Yep, a friend owns diesel Excursion, and with a chip kit, it gets over 20 MPG, and can flat out haul A$$!!! I have driven it on road trips while everyone else (6 others) played played Madden football through the game system..

Actually, yeah. That would be a good one.

If you're out shooting zombies you gotta be able to fix 'em in the field.

Average driveway in America- mine- all crappy domestic rigs but they all run)-

One of the neighborhood hicks (owns a 10 sec Camaro). Note the truck- (this guy used to steal Chevys by sticking the dipstick in the ignition and jiggling)

Heck you can get any Ford / Chevy for nothing and fix em anywhere anytime.

Add one more requirement - must fit in parking garages. Excursion is way large for my needs.
