James Cameron...

How do you think he feels today after the ex took all the marbles?

legion 03-08-2010 11:29 AM

Linda Hamilton wiped him out?

ckissick 03-08-2010 11:30 AM

Avatar made the most money in movie history. Does that answer your question?

That's what I told someone. But the ego play is within the industry, not the drone-like tasteless public.

I think he wiped her out -- career-wise.

I thought Cameron looked genuinely happy for Bigelow last night. He does have the last laugh, and he also had to expect the academy to ignore Avatar due to the huge box office (and huge production cost).

Yes, but it had that whole environmental guilt thing going for it...

dd74 03-08-2010 11:46 AM

Each movie had something going for it:

Avatar - environmental
Hurt Locker - war
District 9 - apartheid
The Education - coming of age, idealism

etc...

With Cameron, I think there's more to it. He doesn't have a stellar rep in the industry -- not really that it matters, until possibly last night.

Supposedly, he called Kate Winslett "piggy" through the filming of Titanic.

The industry is a funny beast, and unless you're in/around the whole thing it is hard to comprehend. They love certain "causes" but also like to send "messages." Cameron has a huge ego (even by Hollywood standards) and he is rather infamous for not really respecting writers or actors. He also has set a budget standard that is unsustainable. As such there are those that want to take him down a few notches. Hence Avatar winning a few minor awards, but other films winning the big ones.

Also there is the whole "first woman director" winning angle. Of course the most ridiculous moment was Mo'nique saying that she did what was right instead of what was popular. Yeah, right...

Best moment? The winner for best original score (for "Up") talking about how his parents never told him that making movies as a kid was a waste of time, and encouraging kids to do creative things.

Wait, they had the Oscars already?

The 3-month season of Hollywood congratulating itself is over?

dd74 03-08-2010 11:52 AM

Well, my bad is I have not seen Hurt Locker. I have seen Avatar and District 9, and the msg. in District 9 is far more powerfully conveyed than in Avatar.

Has anyone seen all 10 nominated movies? In my household, that's a tall order.

Maybe "Best Message" should be a new Oscar category. Until then, there is criteria for "the best", but sometimes politics gets in the way, and "best" is relative based on the competition.

I've seen a couple of comments relating to that statement and I'm confused about it.

I have not seen the movie, The previews that I have seen make me feel that I'd be very uncomfortable watching it.

It appears to be brutally ugly in many ways but at the same time depicts a reality that thankfully many are privileged enough to be insulated from.

I interpreted her comment as there was an expectation of a lot of negative backlash but the story needed to be told regardless.

Seen them? Until today, Avatar is the only one I've ever even heard of.

From an interview:

James Cameron recently told Charlie Rose that his “fantasy outcome” for the Academy Awards would be for Kathryn Bigelow to win Best Director, while Avatar wins Best Picture. “I have already got an Oscar. I’ve got a couple of them…. I don’t really need another one.”

cmccuist 03-08-2010 12:43 PM

Why did James Cameron bring Skeletor to the Oscars last night? I didn't even know they were boys.
