Ayrton Senna, raced F1 for 10 years and won three championships and 41 races. In 1991 he won the championship driving a car with a 7 speed semi-automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Real gearshift?


Jimmy Clark won 25 F1 races and won 2 championships. (and one roundy round indy 500, turning left).

Juan Manuel Fangio won 24 races and 5 championships. he was the best ever until schumi came along.

Tazio NuvoLari won 45 races and one championship. Some say he was a better motorcycle racer than F1 racer. He was very good, but not the greatest.


Michael Schumacher holds most of formula one's driver records, including most championships, race victories, fastest laps, pole positions, points scored and most races won in a single season.
In 2002 he became the only driver in the sport to complete an entire season finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in all races. No one has ever dominated a sport the same way except tiger Woods.

91 F1 wins, 154 podiums, 1,369 Career points, 68 Pole positions, 76 Fastest laps, and SEVEN world championships (so far).

He also took a first in the formula three championship, a 2nd in the European formula ford championship, 2 second place results in the F1 championship and 3 third place finishes in F1.

in his entire F1 career (17 years so far) he finished out of the top three in championship points only 3 times, a 4th and a 5th.

22 times he had the pole position, the fastest lap of the race, and the win. No one else has even come close to that.

He has led an F1 race for 4741 laps, that's almost 14,000 miles! Some drivers get all exited if they can manage to lead an F1 race for ONE lap.

I do not believe it makes any difference at all if he's driving a car with traction control, manual transmission, power steering, or whatever. He's the best ever.

Remember he was also the best 125cc shifter cart driver, and AFAIK, there aren't any fancy computers on a shifter cart.

Do not bring Fangio into this fight. I'm a huge Shumi Fan, but Fangio raced in a different era, far fewer races per season, different points system, The cars were behemoths that broke down a lot and killed GOOD DRIVERS every year. The drivers didn't have the benefit of nutrition and conditioning that they take for granted today.The differences go on and on and on.

There's no use comparing the early era with the modern era. The differences are far
too vast.

While Michael certainly deserves credit for his amazing record & obvious driving ability in modern cars, the statement above is still very true.

might as well compare the WW1 era fighter aces, with an F22 figher jock.
And state that the WW1 fighter ace must be the better fighter pilot because he's got 50+ kills on his name and the F22 has none.

Fact of the matter is that times changed since then, and the likes of Richthoven, Fonck, or even any of the WW2 aces, more likely then not wouldn't make it through basic flight training in the year 2010.
Same goes for F1.

And if anything, Schumacher ran for 17 years, he evolved all the time, and was a top driver all that time...
no matter what kind of car the regulations gave him...
With TC.. ok, no more TC, still ok... dry track? ok... wet track ok.. slicks? ok, grooved tires? ok.. etc etc etc

You do not get 7 Championship titles, from being just a computer driver.

He was the one that brought a new level of commitment to the sport : Drivers who worked with the engineers.... Just like Fighter Jocks these days, aren't just about the stick and the rudder, they are also part engineers, who learn to understand the systems they work with...


Personally, i think it's unlikely he'll be able to gain another championship title.. age does work against him... But if anything, it should be interesting to see him try.. Because he will try to win...
That kind of person, somebody with such a track record doesn't enter any competition simply because he has some free time on his hands.. They want to win, in everything thy do.

Probably a timing issue more than anything. Hard to retain happy stockholders through the worst recession in 70 years. Pissing away millions on a new race venue could be seen as reckless. Just business boys, just business. When the economic sun comes back out, perhaps they should take another shot.

Hispania's car actually looks rather clean, unencumbered by all those logos of pesky paying sponsors...

I would have thought the Senna name would have at least drawn some more incidental Brazilian sponsor cash to go along with Embratel, but apparently not.

Yet, anyway.
