Bar soap dissapearing faster?

I use Irish Spring. Lately I've been noticing that I'm only getting about five or six showers out of a bar of soap before it's totally gone. New bar, three showers, halfway gone. The first shower wears away the "Irish Spring" logo on the bar.
When I was a kid, I remember that bar soap would last...weeks?

No, I don't leave it in the water.

Anyone else noticing this lately?

Perhaps there's more of you to wash. ;)

HOOT! that is funny

i used to use that exact soap. the old bars were HUGE! i bet they just got smaller.

Oh Haha 03-09-2010 03:36 PM

DIAL is the same. Smaller bars, same packaging. Classic way to save a few pennies in manufacturing.

We get more than 5 or 6 uses, though.

sammyg2 03-09-2010 03:37 PM

Some soap has all kinds of perfumes and other stuff and it dissolves quickly. The more lather it makes, the faster it disappears. other brands not so much.
Try dial or one of the other brands that's been around since the old days and see how long it lasts.

I have a bar of lava soap on the sink in the garage. Not much perfume, not much lather.
I use that bar all the time to wash my hands but it seems like it's been there forever ;)

MysticLlama 03-09-2010 03:48 PM

Buy 4-5 bars at a time, unwrap, leave under the counter or something.

See if the later ones last longer than the earlier ones. This at least used to work with Dial, it would evaporate off some of the moisture that came in the bar so that it didn't so easily dissolve in water and send a ton of it straight down the drain.

Maybe they just run out faster because it's hot water and the house is kept at 45 degrees?

john70t 03-09-2010 04:45 PM

They whip more air in to save on product cost, trading mass for volume.
Used to be the same for pints of ice cream(ben and jerry).

strupgolf 03-09-2010 05:00 PM

Irish Spring, made in China.

URY914 03-09-2010 05:07 PM

I get all my soap from hotels. Towels too.

dondarnell 03-09-2010 05:36 PM

Hairy people (like me) wear it down quicker.

masraum 03-09-2010 05:47 PM

You're older and hairier, but holy crap how long are your showers.

herr_oberst 03-09-2010 05:54 PM

Try Dr. Bronners! I tried it and I really like it. Not too perfummey, just the right amount of lather.

exitwound 03-09-2010 05:58 PM

I use Irish Spring and nothing else as well. And I've had the same thought - they're disappearing faster. Though, the normal Irish Spring lasts longer than the one with Aloe. I don't know what they did, but it definitely doesn't last as long as it did a decade ago.

tcar 03-09-2010 08:17 PM

Smaller bars, same price. Open them and let them 'air out' for a while - they DO last longer.

TP has, in the last 3 or so years gone from 5" rolls to 4.5" and now they are all 4". Annnd, they cost more.

And reading the bottles are fun!

Dottore 03-09-2010 09:20 PM

Soap?

I have the same problem with my scotch.

Used to last a lot longer.

Nostril Cheese 03-09-2010 09:25 PM

Another vote for Dr. Bronner's.

One bottle of it will last me 4 months

austin552 03-10-2010 03:20 AM

Married? Maybe there are other guys using your shower. Your probably missing socks also...
:(

From the housewife in me (yes she's buried in there somewhere)...unwrap the soap and let it dry out. It will last longer.

Do I have this problem? Only in our bathroom...getting the kids to actually use the soap in their shower is more my problem....I know they get under the shower as I am usually pounding on the door to make them get out....more washing, less dreaming under there would be good .

Yep, my six pack of beer don't last as long as thay used to either. :D

imcarthur 03-10-2010 04:35 AM

Ivory soap. The bars have also shrunken over the years but it is cheap & doesn't have perfume in the mix. We have used it ever since we had rug rats in the house.

So some group of MBAs has figured out how to sell more soap.. Imagine that.

Who knows what is in the deodorant and scented soaps? Food or toiletries made in China - no thank you!

It seems to have really gotten worse lately. I bet my wife and go through a bar every 3 days at the most.

I never could get used to using a wash cloth though, I just use the bare bar so maybe that's part of the reason.

flatbutt 03-10-2010 10:35 AM

every 3 days!? dude, what else are you using it for?

Prepping my house for sale in May '08, got my lovely Hunter Green tile shower spotless for showings - but where was all that white streaking coming from? Irish Spring bar soap. I had to use acid to keep it clean...but grout was dissolving, too. Googled the problem...Irish Spring was the culprit...mucho talc in their formula. They also said that the excess talc dissolves the bar more quickly.
I switched to body wash...problem solved.
YMMV.

You must have teenagers in the house, or you're still one at heart.

Turn the hot water off, they will get out quick and no more stress of pounding on the door. :)

I have threatened that more than once - just been too lazy to go outside and do it. Bad Mummy - 1st rule of parenting - never make idle threats; only ever threaten what you will follow through ;)....
