You should wait for the HP Slate. It is going to blow the iPad out of the water.

The Flash Blog » HP Slate Running Flash Player and AIR

The HP Slate runs Flash - iPad doesn't. Watch that video if you get a chance.

Although I have an iPod Touch and an iPhone (love them both) ... I can't wait to see the iPad crash and burn. Adobe is getting too arrogant and it will eventually be their demise. Sorry for the rant.

island911 03-12-2010 01:18 PM

I don't get how either of those products are something to wait for. Is it because they cost less than existing mini tablets?

herr_oberst 03-12-2010 01:29 PM

I'm waiting for the camera version. Add skype and the ipad is going to be great.

Also - something to keep remembering. Flash and the mac OS do not play well together.

. . . other than have a CRAZY long battery life, and easy readability in bright sun.

I was recently in Hawaii and noticed how popular the Kindle and Sony readers are for those sitting by the pool sunning themselves. Physical books still out numbered the eReaders, but quite a few have transitioned.

I suppose that if your main usage spot is in bed, neither of those metric matter. ...but then there are many other even better solutions.

I don't 100% agree with their tactic of the super-closed platform (my iPhone is jailbroken), and I think it indeed may come back to haunt them in the future. But so far so good for them. This iPad will trump almost all eBook reader sales from this point on, I'm pretty sure of that though. If Porsche followed Apple's business model, you would not have a business.

It is funny how the world turned. Apple was THE open platform, but Jobs was peeved by the clones (The Franklin, etc). So now Apple tries to control everything. The iPad is another entry point to iTunes.

What I don't understand is why Jobs hates Netbooks so much. I mean it is a mania.

The way the iPad is structured, it is a "supplemental" device. You still have to have a main computer with which to sync your iPad. You want to put pictures from your camera on the iPad, well, you have to move them to your PC first, then over to the iPad. There is no slot on the iPad for this. There is no USB port, etc. Unless the Camera is Wifi, which is not common. I wouldn't call this a "fail" but it certainly is a "miss".

If this is basically a large size iPod, I just don't see how most people will justify the cost. Oh, well, as the Zen Master said, "We'll see."

Oh boy, here we go again! Wayne, you really don't think you are going to get the enhanced versions of these papers or magazines for free just because you have a subscription to the paper ones do you? I am happy that you feel this device will change your life and bring peace to you but really now, the reason people use the Iphone as much as they do is because it IS their mobile phone! This is a device we've grown accustomed to carrying around with us over the last 20 years. Now, are you going to tell me that you will enjoy lugging two almost completely redundant devices everywhere you go? If not, this becomes something forgotten in the car or left at home once the newness factor wears out. Please tell me your thoughts on this matter.

I was reading the Apple stock market report, and they sold 51,000 ipads in the first two hours today and 20,000 per hour after that. My wife has worked for Apple for 20 years,
very happy with Apples success. Lets face it they are the BOMB!

RWebb 03-12-2010 03:01 PM

report back when you get it, Wayne

do you still have the stock?

a large size iPod with 1-2 Tbytes would be well worth $80 to me - I could use it to stream music to my stereo.

I'd love to have the iPad when it is introduced, but I'm not sure what I'd do with it... I expect Apple will sell a lot of them to people who resemble the 1st clause in the above sentence but who don't think much about the 2nd clause.

And remember, the hp device must not only offer additional functionality, it must also have an improved look & feel. Apple is the King of the user interface and that is a consideration for many.

DICErep 03-12-2010 03:39 PM

I'm with you Wayne. I reserved mine today for pick up at the Apple Store in Manhattan Beach.

The best feature the iPad has is the user interface. I'm not an Apple fanboy but the iPhone, itouch, iPad OS is the best mobile os available. It's not a replacement for a desktop but it's going to replace my laptop.

nostatic 03-12-2010 04:38 PM

v3 of the iPad will kill. Apple historically gets v1 about 80% right, then dials it in from there.

HP slate will be a non-event. It's the OS, not the hardware.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Apple devices have become a closed platform because that's how they ensure a consistent user experience. It certainly has downsides, but I can't really complain about my iPhone, or my last couple MacBookPros. In fact I don't even own a desktop computer anymore. I do everything (including video editing) on my MBP.

I'm still waiting to see how the iPad shakes out. I am beginning to see a place for an eReader in my life, and the prospect of being able to resize text and have some degree of notation and interactivity makes it worthwhile to me. We're also moving a lot of our training content to the iTouch because that (handheld device) frankly is how you're going to learn/train over the next decade or so. Buh bye, textbooks and printed manuals...

mca 03-12-2010 04:56 PM

Yes. I meant Apple.

The coolest thing about the new Flash CS5 is that I can publish iPad / iPhone / iPod touch apps. Made two this week and am running them on my phone. So screw you Apple!

Well, if it does not work out, you can always Tosh.O it.

gr8fl4porsche 03-12-2010 05:24 PM

Wayne,
Did you go for the 3G or wifi model?

I was ready to place an order as well but can't decide on the 3G issue.

I have a jailbroke iPhone that I am glued to and can't wrap my head around paying another $30/month for 3G on an iPad when I would not be using both at the same time. Is this the case? You have to pay twice for the same service?

Could I tether my iPhone to the iPad?

I expect you are right. Except that the iPhone STILL doesn't have any removable storage. One of the things I've been doing for years with my old Lifedrive was keep movies on SD cards. To watch different movies, I swapped in a different SD card. No need to find a PC to synch. Also, if I wanted to off load photos from a Camera SD card, pop it in and move the pictures to the internal storage.

Add an SD slot, a USB port at least. Add a front mounted web cam, maybe a mic. I could see this as a power portable system for SKYPE. This is how this could expand far beyond a reader.

It definitely has potential. Seems over priced for what it can do.

Super_Dave_D 03-12-2010 05:56 PM

I am with you Wayne. I ordered the 32g wifi when I woke up this morning. I can wait until April 3rd.

Hugh R 03-12-2010 06:20 PM

Knew to Apple products, got a IPhone a few months ago. The only thing I really hate is the battery life. It's terrible. Everyone tells me the same thing; turn of 3G, turn off Wifi. Why not then just have a dumb phone? I don't listen to music or movies on it cause the phone is dead in an hour, so I use my IPod, which brings up the question of why an IPhone? My Wife got an HP notebook for Xmas, I might get one as well for traveling. The battery lasts WAY longer.

KaptKaos 03-12-2010 07:52 PM

Sooo... how much you want for that Kindle?

cl8ton 03-12-2010 08:28 PM

Uh, yeah. That is a rip off.

I'm a huge Mac biggot, but I don't have a place for the iPad in my needs. I am waiting until they refresh the Macbook Air, and I'll get one of those, light, all things Apple, and a full PC....

The sad thing my Powerbook G4 still runs like a champ, but I can't have all the cool things because it's not the Intel chip.

Post a report on how the iPad is when you get it.
