Beards, WTF?

WTF is up with all the beards on TV? Lately, every commercial on TV has a guy with a beard. Some commercials (like Filet of Fish and that Verizon commercial on Speed) have two guys with beards. What's up with all that?

ossiblue 03-14-2010 06:06 PM

Haven't seen (or maybe just haven't noticed) the two commercials you mentioned but if by "beard" you mean the scruffy, 3-4 day growth rather than the fully filled in beard of, say, "The Most Interesting Man in the World," then I agree--it seems to be "The Look" nowadays.

No, full beards on young guys. Perhaps why I notice it and filter out the most interesting man in the world. As interesting as he is. And Byron. :)

The word has gotten out that I have grown a beard. I'm just a leader in the world of fashion.

It's the reincarnation of Billy Mays.

I think it has finally become obvious to everyone that real men have a gray beard and are role models for the girly men with clean shaven faces. :D

red-beard 03-15-2010 05:39 AM

And the problem with beards is what ?

Dottore 03-15-2010 05:49 AM

The answer, according to my wife, is obvious.

Lot of guys grow facial hair to compensate for the loss of hair on their head. As the boomer demographic ages, we will be seeing ever more facial hair. Same reason hats are becoming fashionable all over again. (see targa 911S)

That may be true, However, 1) I'm retired now, no need to shave been doing it since I was 17. I just thought it would be liberating to not shave. I've never had a full beard. 2) it's damn cold here for a Floridian. 3) yes over the years I have had more face to wash and less hair to comb, but I am a musician (bassist it's always the bassist in the hat) and my hats have become my trademark over the years. I'm far from "going bald". I just like hats. I do agree with your wife though. I'm looking 60 in the eye. almost all gray but it's still there.

zero issues with beards. you are a handsome lot. i question it when the beard affects normal life. i have a guy in our office. he is an ex maintenence guy spending the rest of his career doing "light duty"..real jackass, dirty finger nails, smells like diesel...always fights for cooking duty if there is a bbq grill around..ugh! makes me want to diet when he cooks.

anyways, (what was i saying, before i interupted myself?) he has this ZZ-top style beard. long, unkept, and the matching 'stash on the upper lip. when he eats, he needs to full on tilt his head back, open his mouth WIIDE, and pour the target food into his mouth. anyone know what a chinese soup spoon looks like? office lunches at chinese joints, will make you stop eating forever. he needs to exaggerate the move for the oversized implement. soup all up in his facial hair..DAMN! it is like watching a car crash..horrible, but i cant look away.

no offense taken. yes I DO have less hair than I did in my 20's but I looked like Noel Redding in those days. I'm sure if it ever warms up around here I'll shave it off. Never having a beard before it feels weird.

GH85Carrera 03-15-2010 09:00 AM

Some of the chicks that are beards can be pretty hot. Not that you'd really care. Not that there is anything wrong with that. :D

Racerbvd 03-15-2010 03:10 PM

I grow them for gigs, my look varies because of that, and I grow them pretty fast.. I am wearing hats more now, not because I'm loosing my hair, but because I had PRK surgery and my doctor told me to wear hats to protect my eyes.. I have hear the Kenny Rogers bit
when ever I grow out my beard & hair these days..

That last set from Byron reminds me of these ads I'm seeing. They are doing this like it's the "fashion" or something, but I'm just not buying it. Byron's all 1986 looking there with his girl and it just doesn't fit. The dudes they are showing on TV have that bushy look of the dudes from the The Band in the Last Waltz without the hair to match. Something doesn't add up. I don't see people in public with that look, I'm not buying it. :)

Fashion forward? I let my goatee grow out to a full beard early last year so I guess I'm ahead of the curve for this go round. I keep it trimmed pretty short since I'd look like an idiot because it doesn't grow in very thick. I had the goatee for 9 years before that.

I had a dream the other night that I looked in the mirror and had shaved it all off, poorly. There were patches of stubble. I couldn't leave the house in my dream. maybe I have other problems. :)

Top 10 Things Living inside Joaquin Phoenix's BeardLauren Kawam
Issue date: 2/19/09 Section: Top 10s
PrintEmailArticle ToolsPage 1 of 1
Media Credit: Michael Goulding

We've all seen him, and if not, here's a picture. And, another.

His odd interviews and (sort of) public breakdown has shades of Britney Spears. I feel kind of bad for him.

But, who/what I feel worse for are the things living inside his beard. I've heard the legends behind the mass of hair that is his beard, and this Top 10 is here to dispel any rumors.

10. Suri Cruise: The poor thing has been frantically searching for another home since coming into this world, and met Phoenix one night when she was on the street smoking a cigarette and eating a hot dog. He offered his beard up to her, and she graciously accepted. Anything to get away from Scientology's grip and the dysfunctional father/daughter relationship her parents have together.

9. His house: He keeps his humble abode with him at all times, just in case he needs to strip down to his underwear and lock himself inside his movie theater and pee in jars for the rest of his life, Howard Hughes style.

8. Lindsay Lohan: Call me a hater, and this may be a low blow, but she's gotten pretty thin again, and it appears as if there's nothing that Lohan likes more than to be snuggled up to a once-famous person's face.

7. Wads of gum: He's been a gum chewer lately, and word is that he keeps some of his "lucky" pieces toward the front of his beard. He also has named each piece after letters of the alphabet. So far, he's got "X," "H" and "Zeebah," which is supposed to be the mix of a couple of letters together, or so it's told.

6. Screech from "Saved By The Bell": Phoenix has been said to invite Screech to play with him from time to time, when he's bored or needs a laugh. Allegedly, on special occasions, one can see Lohan and Screech sitting on Phoenix's shoulders, playing up the angel/devil image.

5. His sunglasses: When he's not in bright light, he puts his sunglasses in a case fashioned out of and sewn into the bottom of his beard with other beard hair he's collected from other people.

4. His sanity: The rumor on this one is that it oozed out of his nose one night and migrated into his beard, finding a warm, comfortable stop toward the back.

3. His acting skills: Based upon this act he's been putting on for the past couple of weeks, it seems like Sanity's neighbor is Acting Skills. The word on the street is that Acting Skills grew a beard too, and is up to no good doing interviews on Letterman's competitor, Leno.

2. A cotton candy machine: You know, just in case he gets hungry. But, one wonders if the cotton candy is tinged a brownish color or if there's really any cotton candy at all. Seriously, I don't think I'd be surprised if he was just eating his own hair on a stick, and trying to pass it off as "candy."

1. Amy Winehouse: Since splitting from her lover, she has been found to be residing inside Phoenix's beard, and is said to be his translator at times when he is unable to speak. You know, because she's so much better at speaking.

Byron, in that picture sequence you went from looking like a young Kenny Loggins to an (ahem) older Kenny Rogers - life is just so unfair. :D I can relate brutha, I occasionally let my beard grow, but it's mainly to hide my jowls and surprise double chin (where the hell did that come from??)

Shaving one's beard completely off of one's face has been the norm for quite a few years - which is not to say that to do so is "natural"; it is simply what has been dictated as "fashionable" by the fasnionistas who the masses so slovenly and unthinkingly follow.

Not altogether unlike the fashion norms set by the economics of an age gone by wherein a woman's beauty was measured by her voluptiousness and social standing (an age where only the aristrocratic could afford to be...voluptuous), eg, that fat bytche "Venus Emerging From The Sea" (in today's world I'd be strongly inclined to shout "Hey Venus! Get yer fat ass back out to sea!):

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1268714712.jpg

Woulds't that we menfolk chose, en masse, to say "FKETH YOU! you pussy fashionistas!" and chose to not shave our beards, your post might well be:

"WTF is up with all the shaved dick-heads on TV? Lately, every commercial on TV has a guy with shaved face. Some commercials (like Filet of Fish and that Verizon commercial on Speed) have two guys with shaved faces. What's up with all that?"

Just as a footnote, worst case (in my mind's eye) would be:
