New York State Considers Banning Salt

In yet another nanny-state move, the state of New York is considering banning salt from all food preparation.

I don't think they realize that many dishes (like anything baked) just plain won't chemically work without salt. That, and everything will taste like crap.

Oh, and there are the HUGE health problems that would be caused by lack of salt in one's diet. But the politicians know what is best for us. They are smarter than doctors, scientists, and engineers!

FOXNews.com - Chefs Call Proposed New York Salt Ban 'Absurd'

Quote:
Some New York City chefs and restaurant owners are taking aim at a bill introduced in the New York Legislature that, if passed, would ban the use of salt in restaurant cooking.

"No owner or operator of a restaurant in this state shall use salt in any form in the preparation of any food for consumption by customers of such restaurant, including food prepared to be consumed on the premises of such restaurant or off of such premises," the bill, A. 10129, states in part.

The legislation, which Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, D-Brooklyn, introduced on March 5, would fine restaurants $1,000 for each violation.

It appears that our next rebellion will involve salt, pizza, and carbonated drinks in Boston harbor.

The sodium load in restaurant food is crazy. They seem to add salt to the level the craziest salt consumer would want.

I wish they would just show on the menu how much sodium is in there, or leave it unsalted and let me salt it myself.

I for one welcome our new salt overlords.

if your concerned about salt, prepare your own meals. if you eat out, you assume the risk. its none of the states business.

i paid $10 for a pack of cigarettes yesterday in NY. I dislike this country more and more every day

adding buckets of salt is an easy way to cover up crappy ingredients and taste...
I hardly ever put salt in anything i cook... not during cooking , not while i'm eating...

The only things i add salt to, is when i'm to lazy to cook something decent... and end up doing something half assed that doesn't have much flavour to it.

One thing I love about going to NY is the food. The city's restaurants make L.A. look like school cafeterias.

Now no salt. Sheesh! Big Apple gentrification. Shameful.

Unsophisticated palate here. I love salt. Eggs, fries, beef (seasoning), etc. No salt, no joy.

Glad to hear the State of NY is working this important issue. Everything else must already be solved.

I think the truth behind this ban is that they need the salt for the roads.

this is stupid..salt?

while i am amazed that i can still find people that sprinkle salt wildly (before tasting food), salt is a huge part of food prep.

cooking is science. not only is salt a flavor enhancer, some things simply wont happen without salt. pickles would suck. i bet you cant get a good sear on a steak without salt..

in prepared, processed food, the stuff is salted crazy. canned mini ravioli? delicious! while low in fat, the salt if thru the roof.

salt doesnt need regulation, it needs education.

See, and I cook most of my meals at home. I only add salt per recipes while cooking, and aftewards for flavor as needed. I only add salt to things I cook like twice a month, tops.

Processed foods all contain salt.

When i cook I use the salt lightly. I would rather that you put it on.

However I am glad that they are trying to ban the use of salt. Do you know the health costs involved in the abuse of sodium. Further in this war on salt we should appoint a CZAR and establish a FEDeral agency like the DEA to go after the salt misusing miscreants
