Maybe someone who works at Rennwerke could have a look 'after hours' ?
Not a fan of the owner, but they have some good techs.

Cool car!

I don't expect that ... but a little history the P.O told me the car has been sitting for about three years he had a problem with the clutch. put the car away...... prior to that the car was running fine i'm only doing what has been suggested on all the 924 944 968 cars that sit ... basic belt change and while in the area do the water pump ... of course i bought more maintnance parts like plugs, air and oil filters wires, oil , battery, antifreeze, termostat and a few other goodies.. so i'm hoping i don't have to do a major rebuild the car has 105,000 miles. I won't know until i start work on it.

Suggest that you & a buddy do some initial checking before taking to a high priced shop.

An 80 has guts in the distributor & you can get stuff for it & fire it through an MSD box if need be.

The fuel distributor may be trouble since it's been sutting , but you can jump the relay, pull an injector & watch flow as you move the fuel dustributor flap.

Cjheck 924 944 board for help.

rember this is same motor as in those old mail jeeps, so don;t give up.
