Started my new career today......
 

After 20 years in car audio and an unfortunate situation with the company I relocated to florida for I decided to throw in the towel........
Today I started my new job as a porsche technician in the orlando area.
I was suprised I was able to fit both my toolboxes and all my tools in my jettard, ass was sagging a bit but no problem LOL
First job was diagnosing a coolant leak on a boxster (swapping the resivoir tank tomorrow), then a valve adjust on a '91 911.........things are looking up, I've had a very very ****ty year.....
new boss is cool, and knows his ****, new co-workers are also level headed and very welcoming.....
The wifey and I are moving to orlando very shortly too so I don't have to make the 1.5 hour drive each way everyday LOL

thanks, last step is to get my wife and i to orlando......waiting on some money to come in very quickly, once that happens it's on, already found where i'm going to live......
i stumbled upon the position, took a chance on it and scored, it's amazing how much i really know about 911's after having mine for nearly 10 years, never imagined it would amount to anything LOL

Hey bell, that's great - good luck to you. We had dinner together many years ago at the Bears Den in Hershey the night before the swap meet.

yea i'm planning on coming up to hershey next year, should have money by then to buy some goodies LOL
we had a good time at the bears den....we'll have to do it again, i know i can drag some other florida pelicans up with me.....
i think the 924s is going to end up with either a turbo 2.5 or a 3.0 in the future, but this will probably help my getting back into another 911 :D

that is awesome! i often offer to sweep up at RMG, the p-car shop around the corner from my house... just looking to soak in the knowledge. if i had the skill to do entry level porsche stuff even, i would love to consider that a as career option.. maybe in 10 or so years when i retire from public agency work, if there's still any pension left maybe bob @ RMG will start to let me sweep up around the place...

i can think of worse places than Fla to get it started again... best to ya.

Congrats and good luck! I worked at a Porsche dealer 25 years ago and some of the same guys are still there in the service dept. There will always be jobs for good mechanics.

For some reason I thought that 3.6s had hydraulic tapets(?) Maybe that started w/ 993s.

Just having the guts to start a new career after such a long time being comfortable with what you do shows that you have the right mindset for success! Most people don't think outside their small comfort bubbles. I wish you happiness in your new career!

My wife and I lived in Orlando for a short time and we still have good friends there. When I go back I'm always amazed at how much that area has grown and changed since we lived there in the mid 90s. I only had two complaints: heat & humidity, and always waiting in line at the restaurants (even on Mondays) because 2/3 of the people there are on vacation!

Thanks again all, I was a litte nervous as I'm not super familiar with the water cooled cars, but we have excellent resources on the comp and I can read :D
Monday the snap-on guy shows up, there's a bunch of tools I need to replace that I sold when I got rid of my 911......that's going to be costly, only reason I'll get from them is the payment options as cashflow is tight because I've still got to move......
I've always worked on cars one way or the other, so it's not like I was totally green.......still a little intimidating though LOL

Congrats on the new career, I think it would be a lot of fun to work on Porsches. If I hadn't already laid down so much money on tuition, I might of done the same thing! Good luck!

Bell I am curious, do you have any formal training as an Automotive Technician?

I ask because retirement is not too far away for my day job and I would like a part time gig working on sports cars for people less inclined to do their own work.

No formal training, just 10 years of major service on my 911, plus years of playing with cars in general......
I have worked around cars for my entire life, 20 of them in mobile electronics.
I forgot to add one of the best parts, that's having to "test drive" everything I work on........like the fully track prepped c2 I did a valve adjust/axle boots/pedals on......good stuff, salivating for a gt3 or gt2 to come in :D

Bell, Congratulations, sounds like fun and rewarding career change. I am doing the career change thing starting Monday. Will be selling Acura's. The dealership has been working for years to get it approved and the location will be ready in early April.

just a little update, things are going great.....
so far i have already done a valve adjust on a c2, dropped the entire front suspension/driveline/fuel tank on a 2000 c4 to swap out the fuel tank vent valve, plus much much more........
am currently working on a 2000 996 which is getting a transplant to a 3.6 varioram after the 3.4 sent a connecting rod through the case/starter.......i'll snap some carnage pics tomorrow :D
it's been a pretty easy transition at the shop for me, the other guys there are great and have been a big help........and i'm getting things done in shorter time then the book says......

Some tips:

1) Watch your back (literally).

2) Meet as many of the customers as you can, be cool to them, develop as many relationships with as many of them as you can. Then in a few years you can open your own shop and steal them all!
