Porsche Tax Gone Crazy - Factory Wants $1000/hp

Specing out a car for daily use in the great white north and stumbled across the "powerkit" option. Which of course must be checked.

Except it cost $23,000!@!@!@!
h

Takes the 4S from 385 to 408hp.

Thats a great topline number but a serious tax. I hope it means there are serious internal differences to the crank, heads and rods. Otherwise it would seem Porsche should include as standard and up the price. And force me to buy a Noble.

I've paid $1,000 her hp before but it was on a race car and at the thin edge. That seems crazy to me?

For $150,000 on the road for a 4S, a Noble, GTR, hopped-up RS4, RS6, 335xi, and retro-fit of the Red Dragon are all looking like better options.

C'mon Porsche, I WANT TO BUSINESS WITH YOU BUT YOU ARE CRAZY!

Loosing the pansy-o-matic would help offset the cost.

How many people here have spent big bucks on an SSI exhaust system to gain a few hp?

Or a cold air intake that guarantees "up to a 20% hp gain"? That means they guarantee only that it will give you less than a 21% gain, it could be a a loss of 50% or a ZERO% gain and their claim is still accurate. Barnum was right.

$1000 per hp is not that unusual for some folks when it comes to aftermarket crap, although it should be.

Why complain only about the powerkit option?

Almost every item on Porsche's option list is an astonishing rip-off.

I was looking at a car that had the tiny 1/4 inch wide strip surrounding the GPS screen painted in the exterior color—and that was a $2,300.- original factory option! Absolutely loony tunes.

Actually, no I cant afford it with the options.

And the reason I can afford some nice things is that I dont waste what I accumulate!

Reality Check: if it doesn't have high priced options, it ain't a Porsche.

I think you could live without the added HP and likely wouldn't notice the difference. In fact, I would buy a non-S. Possibly a Targa4 simply because it doesn't make THAT MUCH difference. Best wishes.

Why not buy a loaded one that's four or five years old? You'll pay $0.40 on the dollar versus new.

Hey, it's a bargain! I mean $23,000 to bump up to 408 horsepower? Who the hell wouldn't go for that???

(edit) Almost forgot...the 2011 Mustang GT's new normally aspirated 5.0 "coyote" engine will be pumping out 412 horsepower on regular gas...you can buy it, the 6 speed tremec, and the rest of the car for around $35,000. But then, you'll be missing out on the Porsche mystique, the prestige, the status, the high service costs.

Agree. Buying any vehicle new incurs a pretty substantial financial penalty, you're basically funding the operation that R&Ds the cars. With Porsches, it's really pronounced. The smart money lets some other poor schmuck eat 10s of thousands in depreciation on a perfect car that's been sitting in a garage being waxed. (Used, late-model Porsches in this state are a dime-a-dozen). Hell, get the turbo with the $10k in interior options for the cost of a loaded Boxster!

Use your head, for chrisakes, if you're supposed to be some smart guy with $$ who doesn't "waste what I accumulate..."

Also, FWIW, I used to sell new Porsches many years ago. They've always been expensive, even over-priced. I've always believed that new ones should only be bought by people who can pay cash for them and it's just nothing to them. We had clients like that. If they got a $10k repair bill, they'd look at it for 3 seconds and go, "wow, that's a lot." Then pay it and probably never think about it again.

I'm far from being one of those people, that's why I'm an advocate of the plan in my above post.

Or get a NA 993 and add a TPC supercharger for $10k. That'll get you to 400hp for well under $50k total. I've driven one of these and it's a hoot.

Let's not mention the exchange rate disparity. The power kit in the US is "only" $16,900 vs your $23,000. Isn't the Canadian dollar at parity with the US dollar?

Also the Sport Chrono Package Plus pisses me off. You buy a sports car and you have to pay an extra $1000 to get a faster throttle response and a few additional features. Porsche tax sucks!

PDK is only $4,080 there too.

And remember these are sugested list prices....."dealer may sell for less"
