Ducati 1100S
I know there are a number of Ducati guys on the board so what do you think of this Monster?
![]() Ad is here: 2009 Monster 1100S (partial trades considered) Ad has a bit of a "might be for sale" feel but assuming he does want to sell it any idea of a reasonable price? Thanks. Someone talk me down. ![]() Ed |

That is a seller that has a lot more money than sense. No doubt he has every option/upgrade you would ever dream of getting for that bike. Probably worth every penny of $15K considering the bike new was around $11K. But I wouldn't buy it. The reason why is that at speeds of over 95 mph you flat feel like you are going to get blown off the bike. All that horsepower and speed and you can't really enjoy it on the street or track. It really needs a fairing.

Nice bike. Problem with Ducati's is that they are just too freakin fast. I don't even like to use first gear on my 1098.

The 1100S has nothing on a streetfighter S--I rode both and while I like the monster, the SFS was so clearly better I could spit.
The only real $ add on is the termi full system but I believe he has 21k in it. I've been well over a ton on the SFS and not got blown off, btw, but make no mistake that the bike is no fun on the highway in a headwind. Bottom line, if you have 15k and want a duc, buy a SFS...Jack ![]()

How about a hypermotard? I've been thinkin about the 796. I have a KLX250 which I really like, but its too slow.

Saw an S4RS Monster in the doctor's parking lot today. It did not have any mufflers on it. The exhaust ended right behind where your foot would rest. Bet that would be LOUD.

The Monster is a great-looking bike. It's a lot better-looking than the Streetfighter, IMO. Just so much cleaner looking w/o the radiator and assorted crap+ the high-mounted exhaust.
I'll agree that the SF is a higher performance bike, (there's no disputing it), the Monster 1100S has plenty for me on a naked bike, though. These types of bikes are cool but of limited use. They're good for around town and the canyons, that's it. As mentioned above, they're not even good on the freeway, much less a day trip or longer. I'd vote for a Hypermotard S in the Ducati line for that category bike. More fun than both of the above put together.

On re-reading my post, did not mean to bag on the SF. It's a gnarly-looking bike in a sort of *Transformers* way. And a real beast, you'd better be on your "A" game and have some serious skillz when you give it the spurs. Just not my cup of tea but that's what makes a horse race, as the old saying goes...

How often are you cruising at a steady 95+ on public highways here the USA anyhow? The lack of fairing forces you to stay low of the "lose your license immediately" range of speed. Not a bad thing really. It also makes servicing easier. Its no Goldwing, but I have ridden 600 mile days on mine. For longer trips I run a tank bag and I find that it deflects a good amount of air, enough to make a difference in my comfort and fatigue. In addition to sport-tourer duty, I also ran two seasons of AMA club racing on the bike...so in my opinion there is quite a lot of enjoyment to be had on a Monster on both the street and track. ![]() ![]()

Jacob's partially right about highway speeds--but I still get beat up at 70mph in a headwind. Maybe I need to wear a tighter jacket, dunno.
The monster, btw, has gobs of power--the SFS isn't noticeably faster and I'd disagree that it's a beast to ride--I've never felt out of control or scared on the bike, probably because of the primo suspension, balance, whatever. It's not like a litre sportbike when you WOT it. One last thing about the SFS is to make sure the fueling is right at the 3-4k rpm range. There was an ECU update that greatly helped the problem but some riders still complain about its surginess. And Transformer-looking is a good description!

Oh and let me bag on the hypermotard--coming from a WR450 supermoto, the hyper feels bulky and heavy and not at all motard-like. Haven't ridden the new smaller hyper yet but I'll bet that would be an excellent ride.
