+1 ...except running on a Dell M6400 (laptop) running a 30" Dell (same as the Apple cinema) . .. fast, and zero issues.

Wow. they usually 'run out' so they can milk some free press --get another "news" story.

That's a GOOD thing! I've had an iPod Touch for a couple of years and love it.

how workable is that? I expect its cramped and a bit weird w/o the tactile feel. Did you get one of the cases, which puts the tablet at angle?

btw, I'm writing this post in (fast/sloppy) cursive on my old mini tablet.

Hoping that the number is conservative. Like Porsche's factory 0-60 times and top speeds :).

Battery life really needs to be at least 8 in my opinion.

But I certainly like the features list.

See, now that's what I'm talking about ... (a real computer)

Let's see here ...
iPad:
no mouse support - check
no camera - check
no replaceable battery - check
no USB - check
locked into Appledom mini-apps- check

Now don't get me wrong; I do appreciate the competition Apple brings. But you fanboys who think that Apple is revolutionizing anything here, are just delusional. --Please, feel free to tell me how I'm wrong about that.

i find the 'maxi' brand to be more absorbent.

and some days you just need that.

Just trying to help people make an informed decision.

Go ahead and give it a spin.

I love Apple products (iPhone, iPod Touch, iMac with Windows 7). But the iPad falls short in so many ways.

jyl 04-06-2010 08:45 AM

The iPad falls short if you're looking for a netbook/laptop replacement. It is designed to be something else, to establish a new category.

The HP slate is designed to replace a netbook/laptop. It may well do it. If you can live with the non-user-replaceable battery - like most people have a spare battery for their laptop, sheesh.

You are basically saying that you want to pay more for something that looks identical (dimensions), feels identical but is dumbed down with less capability.

I don't get it. Do you NOT want the functionality for some reason?

island911 04-06-2010 09:34 AM

That is some great pricing news on the HP Slate - thanks, mca. I'll have to get one of those.

As to battery life, the Slate is running a 1.6ghz processor, vs the 1ghz for the iPad. I expect that if one doesn't run say Flash animations (like the iPad can't) . .. or if the processor speed is reduced (like the iPad is) that the Slate battery life will be much improved.

Another great feature of the slate (and my old Samsung Q1 tablet) is the smaller size - it can be held edge to edge (palmed like basket ball) ...you don't have to pinch a corner to hold the thing. --believe me, that gets old, fast. (I had a bigger Toshiba tablet before the Q1 tablet)
Anyway, Dimensions: Slate - 9.21 by 5.70 inches .... iPad - 9.56 inches by 7.47 inches
