dogs in the kitchen trash....

i am ready to take them to the pound. seriously. if it doesn't stop, they are outta here.

we've had these two dogs for years. occasionally, they'd get in the trash, every 3 to 6 months.

lately, it is every day. they both act like they know its wrong, i firmly believe this, as they both run outside when they have done it and see one of us coming.

any ideas on how to stop this behavior?

Why are you leaving it in such a way that they can get to it?

it is in a covered trash can, they are just big dogs and knock it over, usually down the basement stairs and eat from the resulting buffet.

If you've gotta have dogs in the house, yet you don't want them in the kitchen trash, put up some kind of gate to keep them out of the kitchen.

Or beat them mercilessly with a leash or something when you know they know they did wrong.

the kitchen is on their route to the dog door.

like i said, this has only been a problem recently. nothing we are doing changed.

Or call these folks... I'm sure they've seen and cured this problem before by putting some sort of transmitter near the trash can/s that would set the dogs' collars off any time they get within five feet of their buffet.

Maybe try tricking them with something really spicy in there. After a couple episodes of this they may get the idea its not their favorite place to eat. If that fails maybe some radio collars for a little shock therapy when they get close to the garbage.

I doubt this would have any effect on them whatsoever.
We had this stray hound coming around our house when I was a kid doing the same with our outdoor trash cans. A friend of my Grandparents told them the same thing, "Put some Cayenne pepper on some scraps and that'll cure 'em."
Well, my Grandmother did just that. Put a whole tin box of Cayenne on some scraps. The ol' hound came around, did his usual sniff around, then gobbled up the pepper laced buffet like nobody's business!
Didn't even look for a drink of water afterwards.

Put the garbage down the garbage disposal. Eliminate the temptation.

my wife just bought a trash can to go under the sink. it holds about two cartons of milk worth of trash. if they get into it under the sink, i may take them to the pound and call it a day.

Room for a trash compactor? They're great, I take the trash out maybe twice a week.

A lot of good advice on prevention...
But I think your dogs are bored. They know its wrong. Give them plenty of exercise before leaving them for the day. come up with some chew toys maybe. Hope I am not jumping too large.
My crazy male dog I had to X-pen for the first few years otherwise he would destroy just about anything. Gotta love dogs.

Dude... the invisible fence indoor thing is foolproof... it's like a force field. You understand how it works, right?

yep. i've tried collars. my female newfoundland's fur is so thick, they hardly shock her, and her brain is so dense, they have nearly no effect when they do shock her.

i considered set mouse traps in the trash.

I made my dog sit in the trash can for about an hour. Just to let him know how much I appreciated his fondness for garbage. If I recall correctly, he never touched that can again.
