Anybody out there cut their own hair?

I hate going to get my hair cut. It usually involves taking at least 2 ours out of my day.
I either have to sit and wait and listen to the local barber rant on about politics, or I have to sit and wait in a fantastic sams for an hour while the gum crackin' fake tan 20 something chit chats about her weekend out at the clubs, painful for me either way.
I try to cheat, and trim myself up a little bit, but I always come out looking like the ultimate dutch boy.

Well I am confused why you wouldn't want a fake tanned 20 something cutting your hair. I digress, you need a flowbee. I know someone who has been using a flowbee for over a decade. Apparently they are durable.

I used to years ago when I had a mullet. (that's really, REALLY hard to type).

I guess I still do, but now I use one of these, but that's not really the same.

I've been cutting my own hair since 1966, using only comb, scissors, and a mirror (sometimes two, to see the back.) I must say, however, I don't have a typical cut which is close on the sides and back of the neck so I don't have to be an expert. In fact, the shortest I've ever had it is like the picture posted for the Flowbee, above.

I have for about 10 years now. A nice pair of Wahl clippers, two mirrors, and about 15 minutes and I'm done. Just did it last night as a matter of fact.

I have a pretty simple hair "style" though. I use the #4 guard on the top (1/2"), and the #1 guard on the sides and back. I sometimes use a #2 to help blend in the transition from sides to top.

My method is, buzz the top with the #4 and get it nice and even. Then use the #2 in the transition area. Then buzz the sides and back with the #1. I can get it 99% correct without the mirror now, but I still use a hand held mirror to check out the back and touch up what I missed. I even trim up my neck with the mirror and a small set of clippers.

My hair grows fast and thick so I figure I've saved myself about $6,360 over the last 10 years. That's $12/cut, twice a month for 10 years. I'm still on my original set of clippers. I think they might have cost about $60 10 years ago.

I have a hair cutting "station" in the basement with a nice big mirror, bright lights, hand held mirror and a shop vac always at the ready.

If you didn't want a buzz cut, I suppose you could get a flowbie or whatever those things are called.

I use one of these: Remington - Men's Shavers - MS2-390 MicroScreen® 500

Great for short hair, easy to use.

I would not cut my own if I could find someone that I felt like did a good job on my hair. Most places are not very thorough with the job any more, and I hate to pay money and still be hacking on it two days later to try to even it out. Maybe it's my hair, but I don't think so. I just think they don't check there work as long as it looks good in the chair.

Last week I went to old style barber to see how that worked. He did great on the sides but the top was horrible. So back for the scissors i went.

For the summer i'll probably buzz it myself again. Maybe with an occasional visit to the Barber to keep the back trimmed evenly

OSTER classic 76, with a #1 steel blade. i DIY it now, with my wife taking care of the missed parts. not by choice either. my barber showed me his pro trimmer, and suggested a website where i could buy it cheap. he felt guilty taking my money for my haircut.

thinking of ordering a #0 blade.

Started having the wife give me a #3 buzz a few months ago. Paid for the clippers with maybe to haircuts. Bald on top, so who cares.

Am in the military so I have to cut it quite a bit, so I have been cutting it myself for years. I just cut it the same way my barber used to cut it- I do the sides and top, and my wife does the back and fixes my mistakes. Works great.

I've actually been cutting my own hair w/ scissors and a comb for close to 20 years. And it's not even a buzz-cut. I used to go to a really good hair-cutting school and get it done when I was in college back in Minneapolis. I went so many times that it was almost like getting a free education watching them do it and then getting critiqued from their instructor. It was a cheap, good HC done by young, frequently hot girls. The shampoo and scalp massage while leaning back with those tits in your face was worth the price of admission.

Anywhoo, I started doing it myself and got good enough at it so that a cheap HC was always inferior. What I'm saying is that I could get a better one than doing it myself but only for big bucks at a fancy place. Fantastic Sam's would not compete, I can do a lot better. Plus it's always the way I wanted it, no communication barrier w/ myself.

When I was young, I was vain about my hair and it mattered. Now I'm older and it's a lot less important but I still save a lot of dough doing it myself. The only time I ever get a HC in a chair is when I'm back in Mpls. and go to that school I mentioned. It's called The Aveda Institute, (used to be the Horst Academy back in the day). Still cheap and excellent.

My hair is like Brillo. Anything between 1/4" and 12" is utterly unmanageable, so every 6 weeks, I buzz the whole dome with no guard. Then I shine it up in the shower with a disposable razor (strangely, a bulk pack of disposable razors costs far less than a bulk pack of the same number of comparable cartridges).

Been cutting my own for 20+ years. I use a Wahl clipper with the smallest guide most of the time but in the summer I skip the guide.

I just cannot imagine going to a professional and telling them what 'style' I would want.
