Dead Bunny Goes "THUMP"!

Darn it all, I forgot to take pics, but . . .

Found a rabbit lying on its side near my front steps a few days ago; after a few pokes in the ribs I realized it was dead. Having no dead animal recycling centers nearby, I opted for the next best thing and decided to put 'em on the ol' shovel and toss it proper-like over the back fence.

Two drops later, I noticed that the sound it made upon hitting the ground just prior to bouncing was not unlike that of a thick piece of rubber hitting concrete. Now, if you've read this far without thinking I'm entirely insane, I hope you will answer me when I ask if larger animals sound vaguely rubber-like when dropped from a few feet up or if they simply flop. Note that I am NOT advocating the slaying of any woodland creatures/pets/neighbors for the purpose of experimentation.

We definitely need a government program to study this. Do it under the DoD and it will show up on the budget as "protecting America."

I can vouch for possums and armadillo's making the same noise... Provided the were killed with a small round and not annihilated by a 12ga...

Did I just say that out loud?

I head someone get hit by a car and tossed some distance, from around the block. Sounded like a paddle slamming against a punching bag sort of loud thud.

A doctor friend of mine went to med school on an ROTC scholarship. He was involved in a medical study for the Army to determine terminal velocity (i.e., terminal=dead) of a human hitting a solid wall. They catapulted live goats into a brick wall measuring the speed it took to kill them.

I think it was 23 mph. I'll ask him

I'm pretty sure that rigor had set in; after the launch over the fence it still had its front paws crossed and back legs bent. For some reason it's REALLY hard to break the bones of an animal in rigor. Not that I tried, mind you, but two accidental drops from several feet up in addition to a 20' launch over a 6' fence should have had some effect on the pose . . . shouldn't it?

I heard a guy get hit by a full-sized pickup driving to my right almost a decade ago; I remember more of a "THOOMP" than a "SPLOOSH" but that was at 55+ mph. It was surprisingly similar to the sound one hears when running over possums or squirrels.

Had the drunk not been hit by the truck, he would have ended up in my grill instead. I'm thankful for the little things . . .

You should have burried the bunny. No thump, no worries.
