Replacement Window questions

We are planning to replace our almost 45 year old AL frame windows with something double paned and more energy efficient. We are also planning to do the install ourselves assuming that we can save some money that way.

I've got a couple of questions.

We've got a couple of windows that are horizontal sliding windows. Rather than being 3' wide and 6' tall and sliding up and down, they are essentially on their side, 3' tall and 6' wide and slide sideways.

I like the idea of a double hung tilting window that enables you to clean the outside of the window. Is there something similar for a horizontal sliding window. It's especially important as the two windows that we have that slide sideways are both up stairs.

Are there good sources to buy windows without having to pay for installation? I assume that the HD/Lowes route is probably not the best WRT customer service, but maybe I'm wrong.

The 3/0x1/0 slider can be cleaned by removing the sliding portion. Just unlock and lift up on it. It will pull out from the bottom and you can clean it. Reach from the inside to clean the outside of the fixed portion.

Never bought windows from HD/Lowes, but have from other bldg suppliers. Mist places that carry lumber, trim , etc have s showroom you can look at the windows and price out.

Vinyl replacement windows are made to order in whatever size you need. Most building supply companies can order them for you. They can also tell you how to measure correctly.
These will be much more efficient than your old windows, and yes you can do this yourself. There will be a learning curve of course, but by the time you are done with your house, you'll be a pro.

I'm not sure what you are asking about the two 6 foot wide sliders. You could have two or three double hung units mulled (joined) together side by side.

A window should move in the direction of it's longer dimension. In the case of most double hungs, the sashes are equal and nearly square. That same window would be awful as a horizontal slider as the movable sash would rock back and forth.

A long window of short height should be slider or it could be an out swing awning. In a sense, awning windows allow you to clean the out side while standing inside. And you would have both sides of the window operable rather than a fixed side/ slide side.

By manufacturer direct. I they don't do that, ask for the closest wholesale distributor. Have them measure it, build it and if it won't install they have to tell you why you are not doing what you need to do or they did something wrong.

You can't lose on a deal like that.

sliders often do not seal as well as hinged windows

wood is the premium product, next I'd put FG - vinyl is in last place

Al exterior is ok if thick & if clad

low-e and Argon fill makes for a pretty decent amt. of insulation
