Anyone quit or quitting smoking......
using Chantix?
I looked at some old threads about quitting, I tried using zyban last year but it didn't work for me. I started taking Chantix almost a week ago. I am looking forward to becoming smoke free after essentially smoking for all of my 42 years. I remember trying to watch TV when I was a kid and having to get on the floor to see under the smoke inversion layer. I would be interested in hearing how Chantix helped, or how it didn't help. I have so many things to live a long time for and really want this quit to happen.

I quit every night when I got to sleep
![]() Actually, I'm to the point now where I have that internal dialog about quitting 4 or 5 times a week, instead of once every 2 or 3 weeks. This spring has been brutal with allergies (which I've NEVER had before), and I'm getting head colds several times a year (used to be one day, once a year). We're also planning on moving, and I'm looking at the $300 or so spent a month of cigarettes could be $300 more a month rent, which puts us where we want in a much nicer place. So, is it better to have a second garage and house we like 24/7, or some cigarettes that I like in 5 minute spurts and hate in hour spurts... I think this is the year/summer/spring that we quit.

I'm pretty sure that's what my step-father-in-law used. went from a 30 year smoker to nonsmoker nearly overnight and stayed that way for nearly a year now(he still has occational cravings when drinking and someone else is smoking nearby but still smoke free. He said it was a godsend.

I wish you luck! I had the same talks with myself, I retired from the military and my wife had a baby last year, I started paying more attention to what I actually spend on cigs.. I could use that money to support my RC airplane habit or just to save for my kids to blow when I finally do croak.

Chantix works if you can get by the side effects. Dreaming often and very crazy wild stuff. Mood swings. Possible depression. Thoughts of suicide.
Anyway - worked for me - LOL! I liked the dreams!

I've had a few friends quit on chantix. One was, oh, musta been 5 years ago (very early user).
They all got really messed up sleep patterns from it. I already have really messed up sleep patterns, I ain't gonna irritating them. I'll get my jaws wired shut before that. I think I'll go with the patch/gum path.

I went cold turkey about 11 mos. ago, haven't touched one since and have cravings all the time. I didn't use any drugs. I miss it every day, but can't bear the thought of dying early from a preventable disease and leaving my wife.

I'll jump right on that option!!
Are there better open cavity surgeries to get done? Do they do discounts if they just crack you open and rummage around in there, but don't really do anything?

I quit using the nicorrette gum, 4mg, it was time for me but went from almost 3 packs a day to zero overnight, what a relief, 6 years now and I'm still on the wagon. Chose the gum over the patch cause the gum gives you a blast of nic just like smoking and I thought a constant low level was not going to work for me. I talked to different people about the drugs, they are called by diff names in Canada, and didn't like the side effect thing. I still chew the gum every once in a while. Bummer is that the gum made in the states tastes bad, it all tastes bad , have bought this in several diff countries and the Canadian version is the best. Got a friend to quit, he just stopped, but I told him the same thing I will tell you, "if I can do it, anybody can". Read or heard that nic is only in your system for 72 hours, after that it is all in your mind, used to tell myself all the time "who's in charge here, me or Export A" (strongest Canadian smokes). Go for it, however you do it, smoking has to be about the dumbest thing a guy can do but quitting is the smartest, God hates a quitter but he looks the other way when it comes to drugs, booze and cigs, good luck and don't get discouraged if you start up again, just quit again, I'm an accomplished quitter, took me 12-14 tries over 15 years, once for 4 years before I made it stick. |

I quit 10 years ago using zyban. I had quit dozens of times before that but never made it past a week or two on my own.
Bottom line is you have to be sick and tired of being sick and tired. I hated waking up feeling like crap. You have got to want to do it. I replaced my smoking with jogging. I eventually worked up to doing competitive10K's once or twice a month during the summer. There is really nothing like running and dry heaving at the finish line, try smoking a cigarette after that.

Chantix works wonderfully. It does two things:
Attaches to the nicotine receptors, to block the nicotine from attaching. This means that when you're on Chantix, smoking will do you little good. The nicotine will not be able to attach to your receptors. As they say, "You get the "Ooh" without the "Ahhh..." It not only attaches to those receptors, it switches them on. This makes you feel like you've always just had a cig.

My wife hypnotizes people to help quit smoking and lose weight, my sister did it and never smoked again but her girlfriend couldn't wait to get outside to light up. My sister wanted to quit, the other girl was just there for the ride.

Quit cold turkey on New Years Day. Can't stand the smell but still want one every now then (getting less and less frequent).
