is there a dentist in the house?

my wife has a tooth which is bothering her pretty bad, were 995% sure it is a cavity.....
we do not have the financial means to go to the dentist, and my insurance hasn't kicked in at the new job yet......
she is allergic to penicillin, and we don't have a local dentist (nor can we afford one right now) to at least get the infection under control......
florida operates much like ohio where they require payment up front, or get a high interest loan through them to pay for it........
any help appreciated as to what to do.......
pm if necessary
thanks

I could give you all the free advice in the world buy its not going to help unless I can physically exam someone and take the necessary radiographs needed to see what's the problem. Generally the more pain you have, the more likely its going to need more extreme means to fix. Your wifes condition sounds like she need a root canal or extraction. If you can find the right office, they may to agree to just starting the root canal procedure to get her out of pain. This is significantly lower fee. You can then plan for the root canal in the coming few weeks. You can PM me if you don't feel like sharing all the details with the board. In the end, you still will have to find someone to do something down there.

For about $25 US you can use the following items:

plus

In all seriousness, I had an infected tooth a few years back, that had to be the worst pain ever. Give her some TLC, as I imagine this has got to be making her miserable.

How long until the insurance begins? Is there a COBRA type plan or bare bones emergency insurance plan you can purchase?

Its not a wisdom tooth, she had those removed years ago, it's the very last one on the upper right though......we are contiplating having it removed as it has an obvious cavity, she can always get an implant later if I'm correct and it's needed.
She's scared of spiders, so the above $25 option simply won't fly, even though I have all the tools in the world so it'd be free.....she won't even let me touch her hair let alone play dentist LOL

That is basically how my father-in-law describes the dentistry he experienced while he was in Vietnam. He has never been to a dentist since.

I would suggest using Aqua-Fresh Sensitive toothpaste & pain killers until insurance kicks in. The toothpaste actually works- for me, anyway.

the worst pain ive ever been in was an infected tooth. get it yanked. if it's the last in line and you do not get something across from it right away the one above it grows wild. my wild molar above the tooth i reference above had to be pulled around 8 years later as i was growing into my cheek. even decent middle class dental insurance don't pay much in the way of putting a new mollar in after they've cover the extraction..

i waited too long with the original problem and the too late root canal did not take and i lost the tooth any way.

best of luck, a radiator's song im listening to just chorused "my wife's unhappy,, now i am too"

im in the same boat. need 2 root canals..last week went and had x-rays and had decay drilled out with temporary medicated fillings put in to calm the nerves down until i can pay for root canal...pain is now gone and cost only about $150 for both teeth

being unemployed with no dental insurance is very very bad

I'm not a dentist but if that tooth turns into something more, it can make the dentist bill look like a complete bargain. Just get it addressed. Cut corners on something that doesn't matter (if that's a option) but don't cut corners on you. Maybe try to negotiate a price with a dentist after explaining your situation. Dentists can be regular people with compassion too! If it comes down to it, maybe put it on plastic knowing you didn't have good options. Good luck!!

Just something else to chew on....
Infections in the mouth can be linked to heart health problems.
I would do my best to see that she gets this under control.

?

If you wait long enough, the pain will become absolutely unbearable, and usually at the absolute worst time, like late Saturday night through Sunday, with no hope of help and UNBEARABLE pain.

It will hurt SO bad that YOU will suffer even more, just watching her and feeling powerless to help. Try to get this talken care of before that happens.

implants are very expensive, so try to save the tooth.

Glad you took her in , Brian.

The only thing I've learned about the dentist is:

the longer you wait, the more it's gonna cost.
