I know, it's hard to believe, Fint. But for a lot of kids, money just does not do it like it used to. It takes a lot more money to motivate them these days. It's one of those enigmatic social phenomena, like tatoos. Maybe it is just lack of a work ethic. I think it's a symptom of dysfunctional contemporary American life for young people. I think it's an ominous sign of something very destructive, like corrosion.

Just remember, there were no video cameras to capture our idiocy. PS: That's a great website! PSS: I am one of those people that would rather have free time than work overtime. I have always been that way. I'll never be money rich, but i've been time rich my entire adult life. |
The current crop of 15-22 y/o's will not rule the world. 1/100th of 1% of the crop will rule the world. The rest of the crop will be flunkies to varying degrees.
The future rulers are the ones who are now getting top educations at Harvard and Stanford, proving themselves under fire in Afghanistan, or developing their imagination and creativity in many other ways. Not the losers that get our (unfavorable) attention. That's how it always is, which is why, from the times of Homer to today, every generation of older adults in the querlous, fearful, sunset stage of their life, whines and moans about "those kids". |
I'm with Rick Lee. I think that the current crop of Chinese and Indian teens will have no problem ruling the world.

So true...I have at least one who will go to a top ten school and then go and fight. He wants to be a Marine, and a ground pounder. I'll have to find out who the father is:cool:

Well guys, like the trolls on this board, some who claim to be everything from lawyers to college professerors, while spending years in golden hand-cuffs, and owning & running a business, while not really old enough do pull off all they say, what they say, but are old enough, that there parents should have been retired before President Bush could cause their loser daddy to lose his job....
Well, after I got this e-mail on face book, I can see that maybe the losers in question are corrupting the milds of our youth. Check out the groups this punk belongs too, he he isn't the onlt one posting this crap either.. Quote:

Generations
My guess is every generation judges those that come next as inferior or challenged -less this -less that - the old things were better back in the day.
As for the future Chinese or Indians being better prepared than young Americans that is the fault of the parental units ----------- period. Boomer parents in particular better look in the mirror (I know I am one). Culture determines the focus on education etc. So are screwing the proverbial pooch. M |

Interesting views...
We have a very interesting dynamic at work...a good spread between the generations and very different ways of achieving our common goals. In what we do the team is the important component.. each person has a weight to pull, based on ability and experience and watching the younger team members go about it is interesting...they do have different priorities, based on several fundamentally different life paradigms:- 1) they will never retire in the way we (40+ year olds) have been imagining.. so achievement is a longer term ambition... 2) They will not necessarily work in the same career over their working life.. so at 20+ perhaps what they are doing is a 'trial'.. not the full on thing... 3) They all have parent os four generation who have worked very hard, long hours and been perhaps absent more than we should have been.. as a result they see the human side of life as being more important than being 'successful' in professional terms. 4) They seek a different work/ life balance.. knowing the if they have kids thier partner will also be a 'working person'..and wanting to spend time with the kids was well; demanding an different approach. Yes they have a different work ethic...very different to ours.. but does it mean they achieve less? If one of my younger team members does not pull their weight there is no hiding, no excuse, its visible.. by the absence of work and we can all see it... if they do then the means may be different, but the results are delivered.. are we then able to complain? Certainly if that was the case I'd have never achieved what I have done at work.... Can we all honestly say that we have the same work ethic as our parents' generation? The only certainty is change and I bet than many of us here are successful not due to hard work, but due to intelligent work, breaking the mold and challenging the existing paradigm.... |
So what did the good old USA score on PISA? 15 year old literacy you are number 36.
Behind a few 3rd world countries. Our school system totally sucks, but at least we have a hope because we're #2. |

I also hear "it the parents fault" a lot. Lets face it most parents have been sold a steaming load by the government that they will educate their children. And the government just said "Shoo! Now go-on! Go earn mo' money to pay us mo' taxes and we'll edumakate 'dem dar young'ins" and it's like a hook in a large mouth Bass.... FISH ON!!! 85% of parents have absolutely no clue how to help educate their kids and who's fault is that? Lets face it all the crap that parents buy their kids, like cell phones, computers, big screen TV's, PSP is plain and simple guilt money. Any parent with young kids who is serious about their child's education will get rid of all that crap, settle into a traditional 2 parent family with 1 working and the other raising and educating their kids. Or sell all the crap and use the money on tutors and private schools I know just a tad about this subject....and you have to catch them when they are younger. Teach your kids how to read and do math Google Singapore Math, JUMP Math, Stairway to Reading, Core Knowledge and many others. |
Ever heard of inheiratance . Most kids are on their parents car insurance at age 29. Credit cards maxed out . But must have a cell phone and ipod to text message .most kids can not work 5 days in a row before they need a day off. Does not look good for future.
