I know, it's hard to believe, Fint. But for a lot of kids, money just does not do it like it used to. It takes a lot more money to motivate them these days. It's one of those enigmatic social phenomena, like tatoos. Maybe it is just lack of a work ethic. I think it's a symptom of dysfunctional contemporary American life for young people. I think it's an ominous sign of something very destructive, like corrosion.

Oh, i've seen dumber out of today's kids, and my own generation too, for that matter.

Just remember, there were no video cameras to capture our idiocy.

PS: That's a great website!

PSS: I am one of those people that would rather have free time than work overtime. I have always been that way. I'll never be money rich, but i've been time rich my entire adult life.

The current crop of 15-22 y/o's will not rule the world. 1/100th of 1% of the crop will rule the world. The rest of the crop will be flunkies to varying degrees.

The future rulers are the ones who are now getting top educations at Harvard and Stanford, proving themselves under fire in Afghanistan, or developing their imagination and creativity in many other ways. Not the losers that get our (unfavorable) attention.

That's how it always is, which is why, from the times of Homer to today, every generation of older adults in the querlous, fearful, sunset stage of their life, whines and moans about "those kids".

Gogar 04-12-2010 07:25 AM

I'm with Rick Lee. I think that the current crop of Chinese and Indian teens will have no problem ruling the world.

Seahawk 04-12-2010 09:15 AM

So true...I have at least one who will go to a top ten school and then go and fight. He wants to be a Marine, and a ground pounder. I'll have to find out who the father is:cool:

Well guys, like the trolls on this board, some who claim to be everything from lawyers to college professerors, while spending years in golden hand-cuffs, and owning & running a business, while not really old enough do pull off all they say, what they say, but are old enough, that there parents should have been retired before President Bush could cause their loser daddy to lose his job....

Well, after I got this e-mail on face book, I can see that maybe the losers in question are corrupting the milds of our youth. Check out the groups this punk belongs too, he he isn't the onlt one posting this crap either..

I just wanted to say that after i read your comments on your one picture that u r the typical brainwashed naive conservative who listens to everything the government tells you. People like you are the reason our country is so ****ed up. You people think capitalism is the best way to structure our government, even though it means that 1% of the entire population controls every aspect of the economy and the government. you naive *******s dont even understand that the reason other countries hate us so much is because bush created a war machine. This war has nothing to do with these peoples rights. It has everything to do with the oil. Bush and the republicans ****ed this country up and theres no denying it. Maybe your the one who needs to be educated. This country would be alot better off without people like you in it. Peace

But wait, this numb nuts sent more.... This is proof these punks have no clue...

No you stupid ****! my big issue with you is that for some ****ed up reason you put karl marx in the same category as communists leaders. do you not understand that Marxism is not based on communism. We came up with the idea of socialism which is completely different from communism. socialism is about not exploiting the little man like capitalism does. socialism dosent mean the goverment tells you wat job you have to work or what you can sell. socialism prevents huge industry related companies from being solely runned and operated by greedy people how only care about them selves. I dont understand how people can think its okay that the top 1% of rich people in this country have more money then the bottom 90%(which actually happens to be mostly comprised of republicans. sure people have worked hard to get where they are now and theres nothing wrong with that. I totally support working your ass off to be successful. i love how you say its the liberals who are lazy and unsuccessful, even though when ever you go to the small poor towns in the south they are all conservative bible busting republicans, like im sure you are. But the fact of the matter is that capitalism focuses on the rich exploiting the poor. We spend hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out unethical companies from going bankrupt while the rest of us suffer. Not to mention the fact that this has put us in such a deficit that now public schools cant even get the funding they need. You people need to realize there needs to be changes in the economy so the hard worker who didn't have the same privileges some of us had through life shouldnt get ****ed over. How is an economy based on money better than one that favors the well being of everyone. I cant stand the views about health care. I dont see how its fare that a convict in prison can receive a life saving surgery when they need it but people with family that work there asses off but dont have good surgery deserve to die cause we cant make money off of them. for example my friends dad a year ago lost his job at the company he had been working for for 20. his mom only worked part time and didnt have insurance through her company. A month after he lost his job he got really sick and had to spend a couple weeks in the hospital. he was diagnosed with cancer, but since they didnt have health insurance the hospital refused to treat him and he passed away several months later. so not only is my friend now with out a father but he also had to drop out of college to help his mom. Because of our social system and health system my friend was robbed of is youth because he now as to work full time to support his family and he doesnt have a father. How is that fair? tell me. im sure your biggest problem with the new health care bill is the fact the it raises the taxes for households that make over 200,000 dollars a year( and if u ask me they could afford it) you people are scared of change because it going to hurt the rich and help the less lucky and privileged. The republicans are scared because you say after the election that people my age are starting to care about politics and our country and the majority of us want change. Which is why Obama won and not Mcain. Bush really ****ed my generations view of republicans. this is what needs to happen in this country. We need to stop wasting money on the 2 pointless wars were fight eg. pot and irag. the people in iraq dont want us there. they will continue to kill our troops as long as they are over there. if they want to kill them selves let them. ever country has had a civil war at some point. let them have your. And whet did in Afghanistan was the worst possible thing when it come to hard drug. before we placed a new regime there they never produced opium(used to make heroin) because the taliban was very against drugs. They are now the number one producers in the world and the number one supplier in America. Bush ran this country and our economy into the ground and everyone see's it except you republicans. And to finish of there r more redneck trash who do nothing with there lives who support your cause rather then mine. The difference between liberals and conservatives is that a mojority of use are better educated then the majority of you and were not afraid to speak out against our government and he dont come up with bold face lies to fight for our beliefs. for example how your argument about the health care bill being unconstitutional. I would like you to point out how thats unconstitutional and the patriot act bush passed wasnt. at least the health care act dosent strip you of your freedoms and privacy.
And this dumb ass isn't as bad as many who troll...

Generations

My guess is every generation judges those that come next as inferior or challenged -less this -less that - the old things were better back in the day.

As for the future Chinese or Indians being better prepared than young Americans that is the fault of the parental units ----------- period. Boomer parents in particular better look in the mirror (I know I am one).

Culture determines the focus on education etc. So are screwing the proverbial pooch.

For the most part they're lazy and expect EVERYTHING to be given to them.

I see the future and it's grim.

I couldn't agree more, most kids my age are absolute douchebags that want to sit around all day on facebook. There are enough intelligent ones though so that infrastructure will still be intact. But if you think the gap between rich and poor is large now wait till my generation comes to power....

My sister unfortunately embodies everything wrong with kids today, lazy, no integrity,no respect, texts 24/7, thinks mtv reality shows are quality television.

Interesting views...
We have a very interesting dynamic at work...a good spread between the generations and very different ways of achieving our common goals.
In what we do the team is the important component.. each person has a weight to pull, based on ability and experience and watching the younger team members go about it is interesting...they do have different priorities, based on several fundamentally different life paradigms:-
1) they will never retire in the way we (40+ year olds) have been imagining.. so achievement is a longer term ambition...
2) They will not necessarily work in the same career over their working life.. so at 20+ perhaps what they are doing is a 'trial'.. not the full on thing...
3) They all have parent os four generation who have worked very hard, long hours and been perhaps absent more than we should have been.. as a result they see the human side of life as being more important than being 'successful' in professional terms.
4) They seek a different work/ life balance.. knowing the if they have kids thier partner will also be a 'working person'..and wanting to spend time with the kids was well; demanding an different approach.

Yes they have a different work ethic...very different to ours.. but does it mean they achieve less? If one of my younger team members does not pull their weight there is no hiding, no excuse, its visible.. by the absence of work and we can all see it... if they do then the means may be different, but the results are delivered.. are we then able to complain? Certainly if that was the case I'd have never achieved what I have done at work....

Can we all honestly say that we have the same work ethic as our parents' generation? The only certainty is change and I bet than many of us here are successful not due to hard work, but due to intelligent work, breaking the mold and challenging the existing paradigm....

So what did the good old USA score on PISA? 15 year old literacy you are number 36.
Behind a few 3rd world countries.

Our school system totally sucks, but at least we have a hope because we're #2.

It's not that the school system sucks, it's no where near as bad as people say it's that the 80% of kids high school and below are a bunch of dip****s direct quote from one of my old who I spoke to recently.

Most kids simply don't care about education in our country at least until they are older.

Why don't the kids care?

I also hear "it the parents fault" a lot. Lets face it most parents have been sold a steaming load by the government that they will educate their children. And the government just said "Shoo! Now go-on! Go earn mo' money to pay us mo' taxes and we'll edumakate 'dem dar young'ins" and it's like a hook in a large mouth Bass.... FISH ON!!!
85% of parents have absolutely no clue how to help educate their kids and who's fault is that?

Lets face it all the crap that parents buy their kids, like cell phones, computers, big screen TV's, PSP is plain and simple guilt money.

Any parent with young kids who is serious about their child's education will get rid of all that crap, settle into a traditional 2 parent family with 1 working and the other raising and educating their kids. Or sell all the crap and use the money on tutors and private schools

I know just a tad about this subject....and you have to catch them when they are younger. Teach your kids how to read and do math
Google Singapore Math, JUMP Math, Stairway to Reading, Core Knowledge and many others.

LUFTMAN 04-12-2010 08:52 PM

Ever heard of inheiratance . Most kids are on their parents car insurance at age 29. Credit cards maxed out . But must have a cell phone and ipod to text message .most kids can not work 5 days in a row before they need a day off. Does not look good for future.

I agree with you. I am not worried about the top 20% that will rule the world...I am worried about the other 80% that will not and likely can not pull their own weight. My generation and my parent's generation had the same problem. That is why things are so screwed up now. The top 20% in the late 50's and early 60's found that it was easier to just let the lower end of the gene pool destroy their brains with drugs or through the soft discrimination of permissable underachievement. After all, it was easier to keep the masses subdued with big screens, video games, cell phones and widespread social welfare than put up with rioting and unrest...or force them to care for themselves....after all, personal responsibility is so passe...and what was it 10 to 20% of the population? A relatively small burden. The problem is, they underestimated the effect of social welfare...and how it destroys ambition and work ethic. Like a genetic disease, it spreads with each new generation. Social welfare and underachievement is now so out of hand that it cannot sustain itself. Many college grads can barely read...and many high school grads cannot read at all (yet all seem to have a "B" average). The high work ethic once enjoyed in the land of opportunity has dwindled from the top 70 to 80% to that top 30 or 40% and is getting worse by the day. Over half the people in the nation pay no federal taxes and are supported by the very few producers...yet they still demand more...not the least bit concerned that they are killing the goose that lays the golden egg. The genie is out of the bottle. The last presidential election proved that. The electorate has finally concluded that instead of working harder, they can get ahead by simply electing those that will give them increasing large amounts of other peoples money. Unless we turn it around soon...we are doomed.
