Quick and easy camping recipes?

Looking for a few recipes... Going on a small camping trip in may.... All the stuff I am used to cooking was for a group on large stoves.... Just taking my peak 1 and cooking for myself on nights that the group doesn't go to town... Prefer stuff that can be done with boiling water and a turkey bag ala Philmont....TIA guys..

This trip should be a hoot... About 50 of us going... 3days.... Going diving during the day. God knows what at night... Its in part of the state with twisties.... If the weather looks good I will be taking the 944...

Not famliar with a peak1, is it a 1 burner butane stove?

If you're having to hump everything a long ways, MREs are good. If you're close to the vehicle, kind of fry out some crumbled sausage & hamburger together throw in a diced onion, tomato, can of kidney beans & seasoning. I saw diving so might be some fish this time of year. Bring along a little buttermilk & cornbread mix for hushpuppies. Breakfast is good anytime in the woods, so bacon or sausage with a couple of eggs fried in the grease & quick grits boiled will do.

Find the book "AYH Outdoor Food Book". It is a great reference for camping along with meals for hiking.

car camping? take a real stove and an ice chest full of real food. it isnt the best use of fuel to burn up a bunch of those canisters.

...or take a 10" cast iron pot and do everything on the campfire?

i just did AZ. we had a real stove. we did take a jetboil with us. the only use it ever got was to make backwoods coffee up in the hills. we boiled water, and poured it into a french press we also packed. felt all civilized, dressed in camo, unshowered..sipping PEETS coffee. life was good.

Yes vash.... but you were camping out of a pickem up.... I will be in the 944... Loaded down with dive and camping gear as it is... trying to keep it small... And the peak one doesn't use those stupid jetboil canisters... you carry fuel in an MSR style bottle...

I will also vote for MREs.

Minimal prep, throw the packet in hot water for a few minutes. No cleanup/dishes to wash, and they really are not bad tasting. You can also eat them cold.

Sounds like you aren't looking for a gourmet meal, you just want some fast/easy palatable nourishment. This is pretty much the definition of MREs.

On Edit, the photo Gogar posed above includes the entree heater, that is even easier and faster than boiling a pot of water. The downside it you can't use it for coffee after your food is hot.

You're cooking for 50 people for three days????? That ain't no small feat.

What about hobo meals? E.g., make 1/2 lb gound beef patty; wrap tightly in 2-3 layers of foil with chopped raw carrors, onion, potatos, celery all in the same foil pack. Season with salt/pepper, worchestershire. Freeze the packets. Throw them in fire coals for 30-45 minutes. Pull out and split top of foil packet.

50

EDIT: Just realized you're cooking only for yourself.

P4L: for that kind of camping, you need a big box Coleman.

My other suggestion, if it was real hiking/backing/camping, was "Cooking for Camp and Trail" published by the Sierra Club. Lots of good, low weigh recipes. I used to make some of these receipes at home, but used canned soup instead of dry soup in the mixes.

If you're car camping, your really only limited to your imagination. On canoe camping trips I have made fondue, beef chili, burritos, even made duck a l'orange in a dutch oven once. I would leave the peak 1 behind if you're cooking for a large group; they're too small cook large enough quantities of food and are very tipsy with large pots.

If you're looking for "I know how to boil water" simple, I often cook the lipton/korr brand of alfredo etc that come in a packet (great backpacking food as well) and if you really want to wow them make one of those jello no-bake cheesecakes.

Ah, misunderstood that. If you're just cooking for yourself on a peak one, I would suggest some of the boy scout one-pot classics like mac and cheese, the aforementioned instant alfredo, manwich, chef boyardee, ramen, etc.

Flatbutt - you can often find MREs at army surplus stores, but I'm guessing the cheapest place to find them would be online or print ammo/gun catalogs which often feature a smaller selection of emergency preparedness stuff... you can usually buy by the case.
