That is my goal as well, but on the water..

Growing up, we had a pool, and in my later years, I would catch my next door neighbor peeping through fence at the girls with me, I then planted bamboo. I can talk to them out front, since in FL. many have pools, there are some things I just don't want or need to see.. And as John pointed out, it can be useful to you..

Do you live in a regulated subdivision or historical area?

VINMAN 04-18-2010 02:11 PM

I have a 6ft stockade fence around my yard excepft for the back length. it is a 4ft chain link. But I have woods behind me so its not a privacy issue.

On the other hand, the side with my azzhole neighbor, If I was allowed I'd have a 20 ft wall with barbed wire and a guard tower with billion candlepower lights to blind the c...sucker!

I'm in total agreement with Byron. My yard is my sanctuary also ( besides my garage..) I want total privacy back there.

EarlyPorsche 04-18-2010 02:24 PM

Tell him to use evergreens. They do a better job than a fence, are cheaper, and actually add value to your property with age not detract like when the fence gets dirty, mildewy, or crooked.

RWebb 04-18-2010 04:04 PM

talk to the neighbors and joint file to oppose him getting a variance

usually hard to get a variance but cities differ

I have some bamboo planted to screen out a nosy obnoxious old lady neighbor - just like Byron.

IIRC, Paul has done some things to screen out his neighbors also - he may have ideas too.

It's the CITY of Denver. Denver does not allow 8' fences or walls. No HOA, etc.

The neighbor can apply for a variance, but if the adjoining neighbors protest, he probably will not get the variance.

Hetmann is worried that he'll ruin his friendship if he protests.

Hetmann is a wuss.

Not sure why you would have problem of he building tall fence and you can have the fenefit. If he doesn't ask to pay, I would even appreciate.

He's thinking of applying for a variance with the city. His immediate neighbors (i. e. me and one other couple) would be the only ones who could complain. I like the guy ok and all, but I don't really want an 8 foot fence running along one side of my property. The implication is of course that since we are friends I won't stop him.

Arggh! What shoul I do?

Aaah, a rant close to my heart. I can't wait until I have the money to live on acres, where a fence won't matter because I can't see my neighbors. HOAs are the devil.

This is how it was for me 20 years ago, had a a--hole neighbor where I did put up a 6' fence between us. Just not the place to raise our kids. So bought a lot almost 5 acres square on a private drive where all the lots are 5 acres or more. House size had to be at least 2500 sq.ft. Now if my neighbors want to see me in my back yard, they need binoculars! Each house is about 400' away from each other! Built an extra shop to work on the cars, as well as some of my neighbors have done as well. So no one complains when they hear an impact wench or sandblaster. Best move we ever made. Only problem is the dam taxes, but that is just NY for ya.

I hate privacy fences all together. They take a neighborhood and create little prisons. No one on my street has a fence. The neighborhood kids never have to be out in the street because they are free to run through our front and back yards playing whatever games their imaginations can come up with.

Could not agree more. Backyard fences are OK if someone has a dog but walls or fences around front yards has the effect of transforming charming neighborhoods into something else. Very ghetto.

Could not disagree more ;) I really hate communities w/o the property fences - to me they look unfinished. What happens when you have a neighbor who is a junk collector, auto enthusiast (has 3 parts cars rotting in his yard), refuses to maintain/plant their property, or has a litter of crappy kids running around tearing stuff up. My BIL lives in a nicer suburb of SLC and his neighborhood (no fences) looks like hell - especially in the winter months.

As long as the property is of suitable size - good separation between homes - then I would LOVE a high fence as long as it's broken up with some trees and creeper type plants. The wife and I really enjoy the privacy of our backyard and spend many a late afternoon there with a glass of wine. That would totally impossible without fencing. My Dad recently replaced all his border hedges (sick of upkeep) with stone walls ~ 6-8' high. At first I thought it looked like a freaking prison but now that all his creeper plants have covered it I have to admit I like it alot. Does a great job lowering the street noise as well.

I tend to disagree. I think the fence I built adds privacy to my yard, value to my house and protects my kids from the multitude of crazies out there.

House used to have low arborvitae trees around the front, which did a great job of catching eveyone's trash. I now have a fence that makes my front yard another usable space for my family. Oh, and the fence looks the same on both sides.

I guess we must have a different idea of what a nice neighborhood looks like.

It is the city and county of Denver. All of us have 6 foot fences now. I have virgina creeper on mine to soften the whole thing a little. I have never felt like my privacy was a problem.

This guy is just funny that way - motion detecting cameras, etc. He is not trying to get me to pay for anything and says he will finish the new fence on both sides. I just think 6 feet is adequate.

Just tell him exactly that, and call it a day.
