Audi Quattro
OK, it’s a non P-car question – sorry.
I can no longer deny my inner child that used to sit in Kielder forest every year and watch Per and Hanna tear it up in Group B Quattro’s. Does anyone know of a good website or avenue to buy 80’s Quattro’s?? (I promise I’ll drive the Carrera more than the Audi!) Thanks Sam

Nice choice, they're sweet cars, can't beat the 20v. audiworld.com still seems to have some active forums for the older cars, you might want to look there. I have more links on my computer at home, I'll post them tonight if nobody beats me to it.

love it! had in order;
86 4000s 86 4000cs quattro 91 80s quattro 96 a6 avant quattro 99 a4 avant quattro 99 a6 avant quattro and currently have an allroad. The 2.7TT motor is great and the quattro is great in the snow. joe edit: this post has me remembering my fond memories of the old quattros... I drove to Colorado (A Basin/Summit area) twice in my 80Q and that sucker was small! (2 friends, skis and gear for 24 hours straight both times). What a car that was! Thanks for the post, hadn't thought about those trips in a long time. joe Last edited by joehahn; 01-06-2006 at 10:50 AM.. |

I always lusted after a short wheelbase Sport Quattro. Then I saw one get it's ass handed to it by a lesser driver in a bone-stock EVO on Top Gear.
I've owned a couple of Audis and driven some others, and I can never get past the fact that the I-5 generation was basically a terrible design across the board, with copious band-aids added to make people not notice so much. Look backward romantically if you must, but don't unsquint your eyes or you'll get a rude shock. |

I bought an evo new in 03...damn straight it would hand the Quattro a new ass...I loved the evo, save the turbo lag(not too bad) and all the kids harrassing me to see it and try to race me(or worse, my wife) I am thinking of buying a new one or waiting for the new R 32

Take it easy, man, the Sport Quattro (and TQC) is over 20 years old. They were the pioneers; cars have come a long way since then.

For the older I5 Audis, try www.audifans.com or www.s-cars.org as well as the other two sites mentioned. Fourtitude is a bunch of pimple faced poseurs, but it is a high volume site.

The Evo comparison is interesting but rather unfair, lets face it on a tight twisty back road your average 300bhp Evo will hand any current Porsche it's arse with the exception of maybe the GT3 and Turbo models.
A well looked after Audi Sport Quattro is still a quick car, certainly quick enough to upset a lot of modern machinery. ![]() |

Hell....Guys my Audi S2 Avant (20V turbo...used evolution of urquattro drivetrain in later bodyshell) can hand my 911E its ass on a golden plate on any road ....but it can't sipe the grin off my face after a blast in the 911...I may arrive a few mins later but its much more fun....
And I won't lose my license.... |

My former Audi ur-S4 and ur-S6 had RS2 components and Hoppen/MTM chip that were good for 300-325hp. I'm pretty sure I could hang with most earlier 911's.
There is a guy here in Minneapolis, Steve B (Beddor?), that played with a few Ruf Porsches that also had a SWB Sport Quattro that was about 550hp. I remember him quoted as saying it was faster than his C4 Ruf. I might be wrong, do any of you guys know what I'm talking about? E |

My favorite car owned of all time was a 90 Coupe Quattro.
I miss it dearly. It's up in Minn. I may have to go liberate it.

Seriously, stay away from dialynx....
I've just moved over to the p-car world in the past month, before that, since i was 16, i was in the audi world. first car was a coupe gt... that car was a ***** blast... Not powerful enough to kill me, but handled beautifully and allowed me to start fine tuning my skills for my later racing career... Then I moved up to a 1985 4000 quattro. Same engine, 5 more hp because of a nicer downpipe from the exhaust manifold, and QUATTRO!!!... oh god did i love that car... That was the first car i really started to modify - but without any real hope of power, i eventually found the deal of a lifetime... In 98, for 1700 dollars, i bought an 83 mars red UrQuattro. The engine was blown - well, the head was, but otherwise, is was in fine shape... brand new shocks, brakes, suspension bushings, etc etc etc... The guy had no idea how much this thing would fetch just for the front fender (about 1700 bucks)... That car turned in to my project for years... Ended up putting a later 5000 turbo motor in it, because of higher compression and a knock sensor, along with better engine management (though still a variation of cis)... Got the height adjustable coilovers, big reds on the front, i built a tilton dual master cylinder system to replace the hydraulic assist that it had stock for the brakes... I ultimately also switched over to laptop programmable EFI that did away with the distributor, 2 coils per cylinder, wasted spark, a custom garrett gt28r turbo, custom headers, and a 3" downpipe from the turbo back. Pumped it up to 21psi overboost/19lbs steady, and had myself a monster... Before i did all that engine work, and when i had simply gotten it working by putting the later model 5 cylinder in it, I just put a chip in it, which bumped it to 13psi and about 220 hp... That car was faster than e36 M3's (i know, because i could chase them down coming out of turn 4 at laguna, and pass them by 6), and a LOT of cars that, listed here, you guys would yell bull**** at... I was doing a 1:58 lap at laguna on average sport street tires - and that was during my first 4 laps driving there... That car let me do anything, and god was it amazing to take it out on the dirt. I kind of set a legend with the car when i took some friends of mine who had heard about how i was racing for audi at the time (small series, but still racing for audi), and had been wanting to see my urq for the longest time. They finally did at a campout... Fortunately, the road to get to the campout spot was a 12 mile dirt road that was well maintained... With 4 other people in the car, going 80+ on the speedometer through turns sideways, jumping over small hills, and basically having the best time of my life, I got down to the end, asked if everyone was ok, and they just started whooping and hollering at me to hurry up and do the same thing on the way back... I've never lived that down... But now, the quattro has been taken to a point that it isnt practical for the street... Its too expensive on gas for my budget right now, so the 81 911 targa has taken over for the quattro, and i love every damn second in that car... Anyway, sorry for the long-winded response - i got all sentimental.. Try audifans.com, and subscribe to the urq list. There are people on there who know more than some of the original designers about these cars... They can be very expensive to maintain, but as long as you replace the right factory bits with upgraded aftermarket ones, they can treat you well... My car didnt cost me any maintenance during the 2 years that i was taking it to the track every month and putting 7 hours of track time on it each of those weekends... well, other than one set of brakes per day (apparently, i really liked to rely on those big reds and brake super-late, and use the quattro to drive full throttle through the corner... quattroworld is where a lot of the hardcore urq guys are these days.
Great story Michael. I've owned and driven many different cars. The quattro is 2nd only to the 911 in the fun-to-drive category. There's a certain hard to describe connection between car and driver. And as you say, get it on dirt (or snow!) and the fun really begins. In fact, I think I'm going to blow off work today and go hit the fire roads ![]() This is my 81 gravel car and my stock 85. ![]() ![]()
