Ballistic Gel

Would a bowling ball size piece of ballistic gel survive FedEX/UPS 2 day shipping?

Does it need to be kept cold or will it melt?

Anyone know?

I believe it must be kept cold.

I'd just buy the powder and make it myself....unless you need to analyze a particular block for a particular reason. You could probably ship it in a cooler with dry ice if need be.

Pretty much figured out ballistic gel won't work, looking at silicone gels now.

I need to ship ~100 pieces of a new product to press for review.

The packaging is roughly the size of a double CD jewel case.

My idea was to get jello molds in the shape of a human brain and let the gel brain set up with the product inside.

The reviewer would need to perform brain surgery to get to the product.

It's all relevant to the product.

Finger Jello? Let me google that. Jello was my original thought. That way I could toss a packet of fava beans and a small bottle of Chianti in.

You could use 'jelly' substance similar to gummy bears. I believe that it's doable at home but requires a candy thermometer.

edit: if you provide just a few more hints in regards to packaging requirements, I may be able to help. I occasionally serve as the SVP- Marketing for a Nashville PR firm and deal with packaging requirements and implementation all the time. Even some crazy stuff.

I would have guessed the gel will remain solid at room temperatures, at least from what I have seen on Mythbusters.

This Yahoo Answer seems to confirm that: Does ballistics gel have to stay cold to keep its form? if not, at what temperature would it lose form? - Yahoo! Answers

What color do you want it to be?

They sell boxes of 100 packages of unflavored gelatin in the grocery store (well, Kroger anyway). Mix 5 packages of unflavored mix to 1 package of regular sugared gelatin and you'll get something that will be fully set (gummy bear like) at room temp. And, it is edible, which might be an extra bonus.

Been googling that. Seems the diff between Jello and Gummy bears is the gelatin ratio so I think I can make that work.

Edible was/is a desired plus.

3 to 1 will work, but higher temps might melt it. 5 to 1 really sets. I've been working on making my own homemade "shot blox".

What about stepping away from the whole "jello" think, and trying something completely different?

I would think that Great Stuff sprayed into a mold, then lightly spray painted grey/green would give a decent brain, which would surely survive shipping (and protect what's inside), would have zero chance of melting, and would still be dissect-able.

As for this, we called it "Knox Blox"...
Cooks.com - Recipes - Knox Blox

Dunno if the Knox brand works better for this than any generic unflavored gelatin.
