ID 700 Remington
Just acquired a 700 Remington and it has a relatively low serial number. Anyone know how to identify the year and if it's something special?
I have six or so but they all have a letter preceding the number. This have a simple 6 digit code.

Henry, this may help, or at least get you started:
Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around. Thanks for posting that informtion. I found that but the barrel code doesn't make any sense to me.

call remington. i did on a couple of mine i have purchased over the years. right there right now instant gratification. and while ya have them on the phone tell them ya want an OWNERS MANUAL...............there FREE!

The bore is perfect, as in perhaps never fired since the factory testing.
Overall condition 90+% ? The scope is a Herter's (rebranded?) with screw on lens covers. Weaver mounts. ![]() ![]()

.243 's are TACK DRIVERS. muy bueno deer/coyote/pig round. flat shooters.
me? i would ditch the large scope for a mucho lighter one, place new lighter scope on leupold quick detach rings(they retain yer zero) and slap a factory remington fiberglass stock on it and call it good. |

Yep...great caliber, not too much recoil. This would make a great first hunting rifle for somebody's son. The machined bolt knob also tell me BDL model, not a plain Jane. Have you fired it? I'd probably suggest a scope upgrade. Guess I'll never figure out why people cheap out when it comes to scopes...

The rest aren't for shootin, they're for tradin. As for cheap scopes: who knows? My guess it it came with the rifle in '67. Maybe the gun shop assembled a package for easy sell to a wantabe hunter who never shot it and wouldn't know the difference.

I would prefer hand cut checkering (I have an extra one or two) to the pressed fleur de lis checkering on this piece. I couldn't see plastic making me feel better about this rifle but to each his own. Mine is just one opinion in a sea of noise.

Could very well be thyat Weaver made the scope for Herter's...no way to test fire a group of 5 at 100 yards on a benchrest?
