New Phone - HTC HD2

I have been toying with the idea of moving over to AT&T. But with all of the new iPhones and iPads, I expect the network is going to have even more problem. But I want 3G and Palm is not maintaining the Treo Pro with updates, etc. I an investment in software, so I am staying with the Windows Mobile platform. The bottom line, Windows Mobile does what I need it to do.

In the WM 6.5 market, there are 2 stand out phones:

HP Glisten, on AT&T

HTC HD2, on T-mobile

The Glisten has 2 major advantages: It has an OLED screen, and it has a physical keyboard. I like these features. But...the Screen is puny. The size is 2.5 inches diagonal and the resolution is 240x320! Talk about old school. My Treo Pro is 320 x 320 and almost 3 inches diagonal. And the rocessor speed is only 700 MHz. It will not be able to be upgraded to WM 7 when it comes out.

The HD2 screen is larger than the iPhone and has a higher resolution. 4.3" diagonal and 480x800 resolution. It uses the same capacitive screen technology as the iPhone and has a higher resultion 5MP camera with a flash. Oh, and I'm already on T-Mobile.

So, I pulled the trigger on the HD2. I should have it by the end of next week. I'll give a personal review when I get it.

Wow! Gizmado HATES Windows Mobile. Geez, I wonder if Jobs would have given it a better review!

Here is a review from a Windows Mobile site:

Review: HTC HD2 | WMExperts

and a side by side with the iPhone. These guys do really prefer the iPhone, but they seem fairly well balanced.

I have had the HTC Touch Diamond for almost 2 years now. I find the windows mobile is fine for what I need it to do and have never had a problem with the phone.

The only thing I miss is having a physical keyboard, but I get by with some typos on the virtual keyboard.

Very interesting... I'm on T-Mobile and for the most part like them...

Please update in a week or so after you have run it through it's paces.

I am resisting the siren song of the smart phone... but I am becoming weak.

Fortunately I am locked into a contract with the Nokia I have now that works fine for me...

But the HTC HD2... Ooooo shiny

The HD2 is getting wonderful reviews. If it came with a 3G radio on AT&T's frequency, I would buy an unlocked one in a heartbeat. T-Mobile is coming on strong so I look forward to hearing how it works for you.

It does. I'm not sure if the T-Mobile version does both, but there is definitely a non-US version that is on the AT&T 3G freqs. The review from WMexperts above is for a non-US version, before T-Mobile was announced.

Yeah, I was looking past the obvious Windows bias and concentrating on the technology. An impressive, feature rich phone for sure. I'm continually amazed by the possibilities and the engineering that goes into this stuff.

My first mobile phone looked like a small suitcase with a long corded handset. It looked like you were getting ready to call in air strikes with the thing. And all it did was send and receive calls.

James, the T-Mobile 3G radio is 1700 MHz. AT&T is now 850. I haven't seen one listed anywhere with 850MGz radios. If you know of one, my money is ready to leave my pocket!

A month or so in with my iPhone and I'm still wishing ATT had a decent Android phone. I'm harnessed with the 3.1.3 OS until 4.0 comes out in June and hopefully shortly thereafter a jailbreak option. James, I think you made the right choice.

I expect that AT&T will get the HTC HD mini. A little smaller screen, all of the features.

I'm interested in whether the HD2 has the transcriber input option. --My HTC TouchPro 2 has it under WM6.1, but taken out (by HTC) in WM6.5.

The HD2 is an awesome phone and yes you can get one with AT&Ts 3G frequency of 850. Unfortunately it's around $800 dollars and must be imported from Australia. But as much as I love the HD2 I'm torn because ultimately it's a great piece of hardware crippled with an OS that Microsoft has already phased out. Currently Microsoft has said that it will not be upgradable to Windows Mobile 7 this fall. Of course there's some people that already have been working on a ROM to correct that...

One more choice, if you can wait a few days- I am heading up to the Verizon store Thursday with my shiny new 2 year contract all ready to be renewed on this:

HTC Incredible™ | Droid Incredible™ by HTC | Mobile Phones | Verizon Wireless

The HTC Incredible. Runs Android (important to me, as I hate the MS/Apple Nazis), 1 GHZ processor, 8GB *on-board* memory (expandable with cards), blah blah blah. Nice phone, you may not have heard of - as it comes out on the 29th. Just another non-herd following iPhone toy to consider.

EDIT: BTW, If you are into Gizmodo, PCWorld, and other tech sites- surprised you have not seen this phone yet. It is making quite the buzz in those small circles. Basically, It is killing the Google Nexus One on Verizon's system. Google just released a news blurb yesterday- No Nexus One on Verizon due to HTC Incredible being almost the same specs as the Nexus One.

Transcriber? I can do voice recognition using Bing Beta. You say the search terms, and it will transcribe them.

I can't switch to Verizon. I need GSM for world wide compatibility.

My Verizon TP2 is a world phone.(fwiw) Many of their crackberries are too.

I've been using the Bing voice recognition for over a year now. But it is only for that one app. For emails, and daily notes I use the transcriber option extensively. ...even tho my device has the best slide-out keyboard I've ever used, being able to scribble out notes really rocks.

I need to stick with WM, for business. I already made an investment switching from PalmOS to WM, and I need to stick with it for a while.

OK, I see. Like the old PalmOS type system.
