my MIL left a half gallon of milk in her car for 5 days...

it slid out of the back, up into the darkest reaches of her truck. she left it there, and it fermented. she took a hard turn, and the paper failed, flooding her car with the worst scent ever. it smelled like vomit. she thought it would be a great idea spraying some perfume down to mask the scent. HOLY!

i just got done, taking the rear interior of the car apart, and wiping it all down. the only thing still stinking is the foam under the seat bottoms. i did the best i could, and set the thing in the sunlight for a complete dry. what a mess. i dry heaved about 3 times.

her son and husband thought febreeze would be the ticket. the meshing of smells was amazing.

I feel for all of you, I've spilled a small amount of milk in the back of a Tahoe (on the rug) and it was weeks before I got the smell out. Fabreeze helped and I believe I used some kind of carpet cleaner. If the rugs can be shampooed it will help as well but if the milk got into to foam rubber that will be tough to get rid of the odor.

The perfume just makes things worse, now it smells like a bad whore house or the lady's room at Grand Central 20 years ago after not being cleaned for 20 years.

Remove everything. Steam clean several times. Repeat. Reinstall.

Make sure you comment on how nice the vehicle smells around Christmas time so she'll remember to bump up the gift count to repay you for all your hard work.

Youch. That sounds really bad. I think she's got me beat. About one drop of 20-year old gasoline made it into the trunk of my Jetta. I had to drive through the entire winter with all the windows down. Unbelievable how so little contamination could create that much stench, for that long.

I ended up replacing the carpets in my Jeep because a cooler failed and dumped water in the bottom. There is no way to get the mildew smell out. She needs to replace the contaminated interior parts.

I'm still stuck on the son and husband part. Does that make your wife the daughter and sister? How many toes does everybody have?

My lady had a fresh gallon of milk explode in the backseat of our volvo wagon. She did not tell me, she just sopped it up with some towels and went about her business. The smell was so foul. About a week later, when you would step in the car, it would take your breath away. I hosed out the carpets, and vacumed them dry several times. 3.5 years later, that car still smells like cottage cheese.

Go to a pet store. Get some pet stain remover. Get one that has enzymes to break down organic compounds. It will help, a lot.

you're right. almost vapor locked re-reading my own post. my brother and law, and father in law were the febreeze champions. i just hate claiming them as family..hehehhe. ok, it still feels weird claiming them. hate was a bit strong.

Just yesterday I was driving, minding my own business, when a full bag of groceries came flying off the top of some woman's car as she made a hard right pulling into traffic from the grocery store parking lot. You might try throwing some banana peels in the car for a while too.
I once spilled a gallon of used motor oil in the back of our Taurus stationwagon.
Wife was not happy at all with that.
Banana peels helped tremendously.
