I still find it ironic that so many of the Apple crowd are the latte-sipping, Birkenstock-wearing pseudo-intellectual types that love to rail on about how the world is being destroyed from global warming and we need to ban all the oil companies and yada-yada. Yet they have no problem buying these electronic toys that are loaded full of toxic compounds, non-biodegradable, assembled in slave labor factories on the other side of the world and then god-knows-how-much fuel, infrastructure, etc. required to ship them across the ocean so they can text their friends about how morally superior they are.

Pretty comical actually.

However, I do believe that Apple OS's have been on greater range of CPU manufacturers than M$ has.

M$ basically Intel, AMD IDT-3C, Cyrix, IBM, VIA, TI, STsomething
Apple IBM, Motorola, Intel and now own ?

For Apple closed = good ;)
For M$ open = good ;)
Now what were to happen if the opposite where true?

Being a hobbist and being able to hack your own system is lots of fun but should this always be the case? Are you saying Macs, ipods/itouches & iphones aren't hackable from home?

let's thow in the towel for the HP slate too ... they needed to buy Palm just to be cool and to be able to compete. What HP needed was palms IP portfolio

hmmm, I guess rising your expectations and having you delay your purchases long enough to ward off some pesky competitors only to realize that what you are now getting is not really what was being hyped or just hyped is way better than having your products EOL cycle end abruptly but yet still work and have "plenty of life in them". Are you talking about the ipad?

Wintel systems are by no means perfect. There is a distinct difference though. When I walk out of a Best Buy, Radio Shack, CompUSA, or any local computer store with a video card, sound card, DVD drive, card reader, network/USB/firewire/serial adapter cards, or SAS card I can easily bet that when I plug it into my computer I can get drivers for W2k, XP, Vista or Win7 for the device.

HAHAHAHA that's funny,,,, is that what you think? that's a stereotype, so you think your a ???? whatever cause you use a different computer platform? Your right that's effin funny! Same stereotype as Porsche drivers and equally untrue

@ security
OS X security is mostly false security however having BSD as a core does help to an extent.

In my above rant, I was trying to get at the fact that Windows cost the world a whole lot'ta money everyday that most people write off as operating hazards, ie, viruses, stolen data, malware, and various other hacking activities.

@ devices
Driver downloads? I've been amazed that many items I have bought have actually to some extent have been recognized without drivers for OSX. However, OSX still has a problem with esoteric hardware.

@ hyped expectations
I was thinking of the M$ courier, I really wanted to give it a go :(
ipad???? Apple didn't hype the device, everybody else in the world did that for them ;)

@ Palm / HP

Why does HP need the IP? The fend off Apple and their attack on Android sellers?
I'm still wondering why Apple didn't just buy out Palm .... monopoly issues? hate issues? redundancy issues?

1.2 billion for something they don't need? .... Palm was just trying to get someone to buy them out and it worked, so now I guess HP gets a phone and a tablet ( Apple showed them the way), probably hurt Android more than Apple. Also they (HP)may be trying to get away from Mr. Softy?

Porsche-O-Phile 05-02-2010 10:12 AM

Yeah, it's a stereotype - so what?

I didn't say "all" I said "so many of". There are a lot of Apple folks who fit that description to a tee. Some who don't too, but I see enough of them to identify the pattern.

Don't like it? Too bad. I don't care. I call 'em like I see 'em.

True. Curious, in your opinion what does the iPhone deliver vs. the latest smart phone market, namely the Android phones, that will make iPhone "very hard to beat". The only thing I can come up with is fanatical devotion to the Apple logo.

To be honest I havne't looked closely at the other phones. I had some time with the driod and just didn't care for the device. It was quite functional though.

I use the iphone as an ipod too and can play movies and what not and it integrates with itunes just like my ipod (which can play movies also on that damned small screen). I hate itunes but mix it up with my phone and I like them. I have been using blackberries forever and I have NEVER - EVER been satisfied. I hate them, I think they are the most dysfunctional device ever. At the same time though I have not used any of the new models. The history of the device though would really have to overcome with some awesomeness which they never seem to have. I've looked at the new ones and they only seem like they have fixed the basic badness (browser).

iPhone+Smart apps+Itunes+Camera+Video+Integrated Internet+Really usable interface+Cool Factor=win.

Blackberry+No good media integration+Crappy Browse+stupid form factor+crappy apps=fail.

At least in my book.

I've had Macs too, even recently but I'm done with their high cost. When OS X came out I was really stoked being that I am a unix guy at heart. The work they did on that OS however makes it really hard for me to do what I want vs just running a linux emulator on Windows.

My only apple product is an ipod nano...love it! Bought it & filled it with (over 1600 tunes now) the oldies I love by downloading CD's to itunes. I did this after calling sirius about renewing the free subscription that came with the Mustang...

The Mustang came with an ipod dock in the center console...I just set the nano to shuffle play, plug in, andf I'm set.

If you want bad customer relations from a corporation, try calling Sirius about renewal some time... No way I will ever renew Satellite radio!

How ironic. Federal regulators are investigating Apple on antitrust grounds because of its requirements to only use its application development tools...

JavaBrewer 05-03-2010 08:04 AM

If the argument is about apps then I think the Android world (open) has the advantage over Apples iTunes store. Vendors of 'good' commercial apps are targeting both iPhone and Android these days so you won't miss anything with either device.

Seems the big draw for many is the plug-play with iTunes where for me the iTunes requirement is the turn off. I don't like being forced to use iTunes for anything - and we have a Mac running as the main home computer (for now anyway). I think the latest Windows Media Center blows doors on iTunes - but that's not an option. I just wish USB devices could be treated as such...

Apple will need to accelerate HARD in order to catch up with Microsoft in the Evil race.
