How about a iphone apps thread? (no haters)
So far I really like the Yelp app. It uses your "Location" and show you all business within a certain radius. You could also use a filter to see things with .3 miles of your location or 20 miles. Also a it uses a filter for the price of a bill shown like this... $, $$, $$$, $$$$ . And my favorite filter, "open now" if you happen to be out late. Anyone who has used Yelp, or is a member will understand how useful this app is, plus it's free.
I also downloaded the Shazam app. (also free) It listens to music through your microphone, then tells you what Artist, Title, and Album the song came from. it also finds a review or wiki of the artist, and let's you share this info with other people. Pretty cool and works every time except if there is too much background noise, ie: crowd noise. It would be cool to use on trips when the radio DJ doesn't name the track. Anyone?

Monkey Ball is a great game, IMO, and is a good example of where game control (via the iPhone's accelerometers) will go. For me and my daughter, it is worth $9.99. Cube Runner is a very simple and free game that also shows off the accelerometer based control.
There is a free VOIP app, Truphone, but it's still expensive to call and I'd wait on a cheaper alternative and hopefully Skype. Although, in some cases, Truphone may be cheaper than your plan minutes, FWIW. AOL Radio and Pandora are both very good (and free!), IMO. I think I read that Pandora gives more bits on Edge with first gen iPhones than AOL. Get the free "Light" program; I actually use this a lot, more than I would have expected. Facebook is very good as well as Weatherbug and Movies . . . all free. I'm really looking forward to DataCase - looks like a useful wireless drive app: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/14/turn-your-iphone-into-a-wireless-drive-with-datacase/ I've only been digging around a few days, but these are early goodies, IMO. Best, |

The Box Office app is cool.
Just checked out DataCase. That's a must have for me.

Shazam is great and SportsTap is on my front screen.
There is a program called "Caterpillar", now called "Kate" for jailbroken 1.X iPhones that was a very useful utility. It added the ability to hide SMS messages as they arrive and more importantly, it included a customizable missed call, missed message alert. The iPhone needs these functions desperately. The makers of "Kate" have no plans to offer a version through the App store. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I can see how the missed call notification is important to some people and agree that it should be included as an option.
I'd venture to guess they've never worked in a large corp with cube dwellers who go off to multi hour meetings and leave their phones on their desks so that everyone else within 50 feet can enjoy the incessant chinese water torture beeping when that call from the wife about what to make for dinner is missed. There is the alternative notification of a flashing light that changes color but you need to be in line of sight for it to be effective so you'd either be close enough to hear it ring or to simply pick it up and check it. I personally keep my phones on vibrate 24/7. I know when I've missed a call and sometimes you just can't answer right then and there anyway. If I do happen to leave it somewhere I check it when I return.

Has anyone tried Remote? I've been using it here and there. The funny thing is, you get a remote with your laptop. I guess it would be good if your iTunes/Airtunes was connected to your stereo system. Then you could control stereo from your phone as long as it's connected to the same WiFi.

Checkout an app called "Sing" from Midomi (Free)
edit: I have found this works better than Shazam, IMO! You sing or hum a song into the phone and it will (sometimes) tell you the correct name and performer of the song. It actually returns a list of potential matches. It's actually fun even if you already know the song. ![]() Last edited by kstar; 07-16-2008 at 05:43 PM.. |

If you need a VNC client, there's a free one in the store now.
I just downloaded it and will try it out in a few minutes. |

I just played 10 random songs from my iTunes library and Shazam nailed every one!
Looks look "Sing" is better at identifying a hummed or sung song while Shazam is the best choice for identifying an actual song playing through a speaker. The Shazam interface is better too, IMO. Pretty amazing little app. |

Message posted from VNC client!
Needs a bit of polish, but working, and it's free. It's called Mocha VNC Lite, FYI. |
