Beach wedding attire question.

We are going to a beach wedding later this summer in Key Largo. We have never been to one and are at a quandary as to the appropriate attire for men. The wedding is at dusk and the following reception is indoors.

The wife and I have been bantering around some ideas for my outfit and I don't want to be too casual. but I sense a shirt and tie may be too much.

I am pushing for seersucker pants and a polo or button down shirt.

Possibly some DM steel toe boots, but I digress.

I've seen them run the gamut from tuxes to beach wear. Best bet is to either ask the wedding party or lean towards the formal wear.

I just went to a 'dedication' this weekend where I was the only one in a suit, though, so I might not be the best one to dole out advice. There were four beach weddings in front of the condo in Destin last month - all formal.

edit: my wife has just reminded me that two of the weddings were just the wedding party, so throw those out.

I hear you Scott, I would rather err on the side of over dressed than under dressed.

Seriously though, not being native to Florida, I am thinking a suit will be unbearable in the heat.

PS: I'll save the thong for later in the night.

on the left coast, at a "beach wedding" I'd likely wear shorts and a hawaiian shirt if during the day, long pants and a hawaiian shirt if at night. But I tend towards under dressing and don't own a suit.

As an alternative, the last wedding I went to was up in the Malibu hills overlooking the ocean, wore khakis and a 5.11 black button down shirt. No tie. No suit. I did have shoes though as we rode there and stashed the bike clothes. ymmv.

Nice shorts and a clean shirt. NO TIE. NO JACKET.

Key Largo will be nice at dusk. It's an island surrounded by water, so it should be pretty comfy. I'd still think that a suit would be darn uncomfortable (but then I think a suit is ALWAYS uncomfortable).

I'd definitely say, ask the folks who're having the wedding. Personally, I think that if you're having a wedding outdoors in Florida in the summer (especially on the beach) and you aren't expecting shorts, Hawaiian shirts and flip-flops, you're being discourteous, but that's just me.

Another great thought by nostatic, a light pair of thin cotton/silk/linen pants would be acceptible as well, especially in the evening.

ASK the folks getting married!

My original suggestion was shorts, but the wife was not impressed. Shorts and a nice shirt are not out of the question for me if I can someway convince her that the Pelican braintrust agrees that it is ok.

I will have to find out more details about the reception, etc.

My wife has suggested a summer dress, but I'm assuming she's referring to any women attending the event and not yourself.

If I get enough suggestions, I will have to consider it and post pics.

Simple, linen in light colors for pants and shirt. Weaved leather shoes with no socks and a light sweater or linen jacket if it gets chilly. Or a Summer dress.
