G.o.a.t.

The Tiger thread got me thinking -

Who is the Greatest Of All Time in these 7 sports?

1) Golf - Tiger Woods

2) Boxing - Ali? He was before my time, so I don't know. I know Tyson was devastating in his prime.

3) Basketball - I guess Jordan (scoring titles, team titles, MVP awards, etc.) But Kareem was also unstoppable, had lots of titles, and was effective at 40+ years old.

4) Hockey - I don't follow, but seems like Gretsky is the unanimous choice.

5) Baseball - No idea.

6) Football - ??? Joe Montana? (lots of wins, including 4 superbowl wins).

7) Auto Racing - Schumacher.

Andretti and Foyt have to have mention in cat 7 because they won at so many different types of cars. I'll enter Willie Mays in cat 5, but there are so many.

Each year for decades there have been only a handful of F1 drivers with the capability to win multiple races. When it gets to baseball, you can say that about home run hitters or base stealers. But overall and all time? That's gonna be tough as opposed to the very few that have held a world champions belt in boxing.

Also, the sports have changed enormously. What made Floyd Patterson great is not germane these days. At least I don't think so.

Tiger Woods is not the G.o.a.t. yet.

Baseball and football are obvious to anyone who follows the sports. Baseball is Ruth and football is Joe Greene.

I vote Larry Bird, a real team player with real skill.

Motocross_ Ricky Carmichael calls himself the Goat, but I don't.

I'd give Jeremy McGrath Goat status in Supercross, and Roger DeCoster or Bob Hannah the Goat in Motocross.

Probably lean towards DeCoster.

Golf: Tie between Tiger and Jack

Baseball: Babe Ruth (People forget how great a pitcher he was).

Hockey: Gretzky

Basketball: Wilt (They had to change the rules to slow him down).

Football: Montana but could end up be Manning. Jim Brown in another choice.

Boxing: Too hard to say. Tyson was unstoppable until his private life fell apart.

Joe Montana and Steve Young both had a lot of success throwing balls to Jerry Rice.

Motorcycle racing: Giacomo Agostini

Rossi isn't far behind, but he has to break Ago's 122 GP record. Then there are all of Ago's TT wins, but Rossi can't contend the TT since Yamaha's contract forbids him.

Hannah is my all time favorite rider and who doesn't respect Decoster, but I think Carmichael was better than McGrath on similar modern motocross bikes. Carmichael pushed the envelope farther than McGrath and more often rode closer to the edge "successfully" than any other riders IMO. I watched him as a kid on 60s/80s when I raced at the US amateur nationals in the late 80s early 90s.... The kid could barely touch the pegs on the 80 but he flat out flew even back then when his mother was taking him to the races.

Too bad Pastrana did not focus on racing as I believe he was perhaps the most gifted while possessing the most extreme WFO MX mentality I have seen to date.

For hockey I would say Bobby Orr. Career cut way too short. Gretzky was a great player however he had on ice protection (eg. Dave Semenko, Marty Mc.Sorley).
