Tobacco, How many addicts
I've been struggling this week end trying to quit, cold turkey and wondered how many other Pelicans suffered this addiction. It started over 30 years ago on a highschool baseball team. The coach and a couple other team mates were chewing. The bag of Redman was sitting on the dugout bench. I asked to try some and he OK'd and even though it didn't make sick like the other guys, I didn't like it. A few games latter that season, one team mate brought some spark-plug and another guy brought Copenhagen. I thought both were OK and chose Copenhagen and been chewing for 30 years.
Tried everything to quit, can't last long before loosing my mind. Then I break down and buy a tin and everything is normal again. BTW, when I started Cope was 88 cents/tin now $5/tin. I'm down to 1 tin/ 2.5 days from 1/day. |
I quit smoking 10 years ago along with my wife. We were trying to have children.
It sounds as if you want to quit which is the first hurdle. However, you may need to get some help from a doctor. Do you have kids/wife? Find a motivator in your life and set small goals. If anything, think of how that $$$$$$ could be spent on other things, like your Porsche. I'm not much of a motivational speaker/typer but I know that you will feel better once you've kicked the habit. Good luck, my friend. SmileWavy |
I used to go through cans pretty quick but quit when I was still in the service; used to swallow my spit when dipping Cope but one day while doing laundry I accidently swallowed the whole wad- ran into the laundromat, puked into a trashcan, sat out back for a few hours and haven't dipped since.
Ask me why I don't drink peach schnapps anymore either . . . |
I've bee struggling with smoking for a long time. Since I was about 17. I'm 45 now and I can't get away with it for much longer.
I think the first step is deciding that you really want to stop. And that's my problem. I actually like smoking but the though that it will shorten my life is just horrible. So I still smoke hoping something will change but it won't unless I change... You can get and stay fit and still be a smoker... I'm living proof as I walk for about an hour everyday and still smoke the stupid things. This is something I wrote in another thread... (Political content removed) Quote:

I never really got into smokeless ( tobacco ) but am 1 month into not smoking for the rest of my life. I started a thread about it here, http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/535848-anyone-quit-quitting-smoking.html Wayne and Peter are right, you have to want to quit, then get some help from a doctor. There are lots of online support forums to help as well Google is your friend here. Good Luck

One other thing to help is to change your habits. Smoking is obviously different than chewing but I think you can apply the same principles.
If going to a place or doing an activity makes you want to smoke/chew, don't do it or at least change up the routine. I can honestly state that once I quit I have not had the desire to smoke again. Even when in a club/bar situation where others were smoking. It was at a dinner party for my former boss who had retired. I avoid bars and other places of that nature whenever I can. |
Thanks for the advise and links to other threads on the topic. I really quit once after a long winter week end 2 day 2 night hike in the White Mts. of New Hampshire. That 1st dip one day latter really tasted great.
I hope to go on a tobaco free excursion soon. That may be the cure and seeking out a Dr. is a good idea too. Yes, it cost alot of Pcar upgrade money ......probably could have bought a car. |
Maybe try this? Get Huge - Oregon Mint Snuff Co
Might help with a gradual taper off program...1st use mint every other dip...then 2 out of 3 dips, and so on? |
Chewing is a sneaky habit.
I think if you can identify when you chew and why, you can figure out how to quit. Stress is a big one for tobacco use of any kind. I hope you are successful at kicking this habit! |
