Angry How would you slow down people who do not care!

I have a problem regarding idiots driving to fast, and not sure any more how to solve the problem

I will try to stay political correct and and not offend anyone whilst typing this - but my blood is boiling, and I am having problems keeping calm...

We live in a suburb just outside of Stockholm in Sweden, in a road that is a dead end.

The road has houses on the one side and light industry on the other. There is a 10 year plan to replace all the industry with new and expensive houses and apartments - this was in part the reason why we purchased the house. It was at the price we could afford, and the value was predicted to go up with all the development they are doing round in the area.

The industry on the other side of the road, is shrinking rapidly as businesses go bust or move to new (better locations). We have one large company that deal in fire-proof boarding. They have some trucks that turn up from time-to-time to collect or deliver - but as this is during working hours it does not really affect us that much.

The problem I have is with two very small privately run car fixing garages. They are not run by locals, and everybody who work there do not speak a word of English and very limited Swedish. I know this for sure after having tried repeatedly to appeal to their better side - and failed drastically

We have two kids. My son is about to turn 2 and our daughter is 3 months old. We are not the only family on the street with kids - there are a lot of kids on our street.

Now here is the problem. The people working at these two garages believe that our street (which is a good length straight road) was built as their high-speed test track, and test all forms of cars ( a lot of them look like they are about to fall apart and sound really bad!) up and down the street.

The fact that they do this on a road that is designated as a 30K/hr road iterates me enough - the fact that they also feel it is appropriate to do so in the evenings and weekends when my son wants to be out playing, is making my see red. I can not let my son out to ride his bike on what should be an empty dead end road at the weekends due to some ignorant ********** not having any respect for the speeding limit and families that live on the road

I have repeatedly been down to talk to them, and it is a complete waste of time. I have tried to stand in the middle of the road when they drive up and down, but they just smile and drive past. I have pushed on them so much, that I am starting to worry about the safety of my family and home - they do not look like people who would think twice about putting a match to your home!

I have called the Police twice, but they have not done much.

So, if you have managed to read to the end - please, what should I do???

Speak to the other residents and band together to get the police involved.

Get the news media involved.

I have already spoken to the other residents. Problem is that they are all to scared to react. So far it has been me on a crusade.

The police are slow to react as they need to catch them driving fast do be able to do anything, and the feeling I get is that they will not give this priority until someone gets killed by a speeding car

Getting the media involved could be an option...

pour oil on the road, right where they start to brake.... (try to make them crash close to their shop, for added bonus points)
Glass, metal splinters on the shops driveway.
Oil and chemical spill on their driveway, then call the cops for environmental violations.
Buy an air gun, shoot them as they pass, the cars, not the drivers.... they'll hear the pellets hitting the paintjob. It might take a while before the make the link. If it takes too long, shoot drivers.

To be safe, I'll put this in green font, but it would itch to do do these things for real. I understand your frustration.

Videotape the offenses and present that to the police.

As far as the media, if your local tv folks are anything like ours they love to have camera time with stories like these. It feeds the ego and that can work for you in this case.

Borrow a radar gun and film them speeding. Then you can show the film to those that can enforce the speed limit. Have speed bumps installed. Talk to the owner of the company and track down where they live then if the owner is married call the wife and tell her your concerns. Check out if they are operating the business following all the laws regarding such business.

Bingo, that's what I did a couple years ago. The city repaved and widened my street, and overnight it went from being a slow meandering road, to a throughway. I finally lost it when a 6yr girl got hit at a crosswalk. I set up camp at the foot of my driveway with a sports radar gun and a digital camera, and posted the pics online:
Gondola Point Grand Prix

Got a fair bit of coverage, and traffic slowed down within a few days.

My favorite quote from the news:
"Heavy-footed drivers on the Gondola Point Road had better watch out for the Rothesay Freedom Militia and Chowder Club. " lol

Agree. Talk with the police and Mayor first and if not luck then take it to the television station or newspapers. Tell them that its only a matter of time before someone is hit and that the local residents have tried to slow them down with no luck. Having a video or three of this would help.

I used to have some neighbors behind me (further in on our dead end road) that did the same thing, along with their miscreant friends that would come over to visit. No common sense at all; they would hit 45-50 or so on a 25 mph dead end street, with all kinds of little kids out playing in their front yards and riding bikes, trikes, skateboards, and whatnot in the street. There was just no reasoning with them. The only answer from the police was "we would have to see it", and then they would refuse to come and wait for them, even though it happened every day at the same time as they were coming home from work.

I understand your frustration. We put up with this for years. We (the whole neighborhood) tried everything from reason to threats to the police. Nothing worked for long. Some folks just don't get it, and nothing the rest of us can say or do will ever change that. We got lucky when they finally moved away; otherwise, we would probably still be dealing with it.

That is spot-on Jeff. That is exactly what it is like. They do not live here and they do not care - to them it is just another street. I have tried to be nice and talk to them. I have spoken to the owners. As I said, i have even tried to step out in front of them to try and scare them - they just smile and use me as an extra test for their steering and suspension!!!

The Police have the same attitude as you say, and are not willing to sit and just hope that they will drive down to fast. They actually know about the problem, but say they can not spare the people and time.

Problem is that most actions will (both I and the other parents in the street believe) be met with retaliation.

I just wanted to vent my frustration and anger where someone would actually take the time to listen and support - sorry that it had to be you all

I like the media idea, I will investigate that further...
