Scariest movie you've ever seen?

Exorcist. I still can't watch it again to this day.

I hear the director's cut of Exorcist is many times more scary, if you can believe that.

Alien got to me back in the day.

These days the daily news terrifies me.

Question: what's the difference between scary and suspenseful? Or are they the same?

+1

Not as scary now, but when I was younger:

Poltergeist.

Amityville Horror.

The Shining.

As of recent, The Strangers was really good for a scary movie. Taking the SO to see Paranormal Activity tonight.

I didn't like Hannibal and I really didn't like Jacobs Ladder. I didn't sleep well after Jacobs Ladder.

The Shining, no doubt. I would often visit the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park and would get the willies looking at the stairs and down a few halls.

The Exorcist was really scary. I think I saw it when I was about 12.

Then, about 2 years later, I was home alone with the lights out and watched A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Those were both really scary to me at the time.

Suspenseful and scary are 2 different things, definitely. Scary is when stuff makes you jump or cringe or not want to look. It's often an unpleasant visual or idea that sends a chill down your spine. Often something shocking.

Suspense is the tense waiting for something that's usually shocking.

The most suspenseful movie I've ever seen was "Sleeping with the Enemy" with Julia Roberts. Suspenseful is when you think something is going to happen and you're on the edge of your seat waiting for it to happen. Suspense is often used in scary movies. For me, the reason Sleeping with the Enemy was so suspenseful (to the point of not being enjoyable) is that I was constantly waiting for the psycho husband to jump out, but he didn't, so by the end of the movie, I had been sitting on the edge of my seat tensed up waiting for the shock for so long that I was very tense.

I guess it's a fine line between the two and there are usually aspects of each in the same movie. Whichever the movie has more of is what I'd call the movie.

I saw The Ring in theaters, to this day the only movie that made me actually cry out a bit (yes, like a little girl). It was at that point where they show the girl dead in the closet.

In terms of overall "after the lights come up" impact, has to be Jaws... to this day I worry about sharks whenever I am in the ocean, even though I know it is irrational.

The 80's remake of John Carpenter's "The Thing"....

The only time I've slept with a light on in my entire life... I've watched it a few times since and even given how crude the special effects are by today's standards, this one still gives me the willies...

The scene where all the sled dogs are locked in the kennel with the one that's actually a monster - GAHHH!!!!

The original Alien.

The bonus was watching Sigourney Weaver in panties.

The Exorcist was just not realistic to me. Alien was much more believable.
