One of my 'fruity' colleagues emailed me the news (PC here). My response:

The enemy has become us.

How long before apple becomes the evil overlord and MS the friendly underdog?

This is interesting...

Quote:
As of Wednesday, Wall Street valued Apple at $222.12 billion and Microsoft at $219.18 billion.
So 1.35% ahead in value...

Quote:
The revenue of the two companies are comparable, with Microsoft at $58.4 billion and Apple at $42.9 billion.
but 36% behind in revenue.

I'm not faulting Apple. I've got an ipod, and I think it's great. I'd be surprised if there was another mp3 player out there that is as good. Some may be cheaper and some may have a better feature here and there, but all around, I bet the iPod is tops. Also, I think the iPhone (I've got an Android phone that I love) is a top notch product. I would very much like to have an iPad, I actually think I'd get some use out of one (come Aug, happy B-day to meeeee). I'm less impressed with their computers. I'm sure they're great, but I don't think they are great enough. Sadly, I think the biggest thing they have going for them in computers is that Microsoft is old and familiar and doesn't have the best reputation (not entirely warranted, I think) and Apply which I'm sure does have a good product, (probably comparable) is mostly cashing in on it's name and fadiness WRT computer sales. I do think the computer built into the monitor thing was a stroke of genius.

I'd love to have a few Apple products and wish I had some old Apple Stock, but MS is still ruling the world when it comes to PCs.

HA!

i almost posted that link this AM. But didn't want to upset the fanboys.

....you know, the cognitive dissonance over their beloved alternative computer mfg becoming the 800_lb gorilla.

...well, as far as stock market cap goes. I suppose they still have a way to go in the computer market share.

Lots of developers already feel this way. Google and Adobe are taking advantage of the oppurtunity and seem to be mounting a solid push back.

Most of this attitude was revealed during Google's IO Conference last week. Lots of jabs at Apple.

It will be interesting to see how far Google explores hardware production ( + Android OS). Hell if Google sold computers, tablets and phones out of a storefront I'd bet they would give Apple a good run.

One thing is for certain, competition is good!

It was good when HTC had their quarter VGA touch pad phones, better when Apple introduced the HVGA (half VGA) iPhone, and now everyone (except iPhoners) has WVGA phones running a 1ghz processor. --phone/devices that would kick the ass of most big bulky computers of just a few years earlier. --although they do cost less.

I'd be willing to try and Android clone of an iPad, but I'm not holding my breath.

There's a lot more to it than simply hanging a shingle.

Gateway tried it, and failed.

Dell tried it, and failed.

Then when Apple tried they all said it would fail.

And when it did not Dell tried it again, and failed.

MSFT seems to be doing well enough to expand, but then again they basically took the Apple concept, poached a bunch of Apple store employees and changed the sign.

We'll see if it maintains.

Interesting. In todays market, to be trading at a 20+ P/E is pretty amazing. The common wisdom would be to bet against it. But then, we're talking about Apple. Common wisdom often doesn't seem to apply.
