We are going to fill in around the palm, and we will put up a cast iron railing around one side of it.

" A tree grows in Brooklyn". Or in your case, Houston.

Getting some more work done this Labor Day weekend. The bar, trim. and siding is all cedar. We were going to put up hardyboard and then paint, but decided the cedar gives a more rustic look.

Excellent project!

He's using a ledger. There should be three nails under each joist in the ledger. For a deck 6" of the ground, it's six of one and a half dozen of other.

Using treated wood against masonry is code though. Keeps the termites at bay...

BRPORSCHE, What are you using to keep water out from above?

I hate to say this, but, no joist hangers? I thought those were code nowadays.
Mabye put a bench around the base of that tree so someone doesn't break an ankle.

That is a cool freakin idea and looks good. Congrats.

Bingo. Ledgers were used for the decking.

We used some type of plasctic. Very little rain gets through the deck/stairs, but nontheless we still put a roof on it. Let me go snap a pic.

It was tough to get a picture of, but here is the roof above the Tiki bar.

There ya go! Heck, it's an outdoor Tiki bar, not a submarine, so that should work great.
