Grass hopper invasion

Been working in the jungle for years but never saw anything like last night, the grass hoppers are big here, I mean big, 6 - 8 inches and you see the odd one every now and again but last night we were invaded, there were thousands and they can fly a couple of hundred feet at one time, my concern is that the hoppers will bring the snakes, I hate snakes

I'm in the Vancouver suburbs but I work in the jungle in S. America, if we had Grass hoppers that big at home I'd move

6-8 inches and travelling in groups of "thousands" doesn't sound like grasshoppers... could it be locusts? Do they eat a lot?
