Worst call in the history of baseball

9th inning, two outs. Detroit vs. Cleveland, in Detroit. Batter grounds to first baseman, he throws to pitcher, ump calls the runner safe. But he was out by a mile. Oh, did I mention? The call blew a PERFECT GAME!

That's just terrible. Baseball needs replay.

KaptKaos 06-02-2010 09:35 PM

Wow. That sucks.

Heel n Toe 06-02-2010 10:02 PM

Major suckage... no excuse for that. Ugh.

sc_rufctr 06-02-2010 11:14 PM

Out by at least a yard!...

Porsche-O-Phile 06-03-2010 02:02 AM

Part of the game. If you don't like it, play shuffleboard.

Unfortunate but at least umpire Jim Joyce did the right thing and called after the game to apologize for blowing the call. Doesn't give the guy his perfect game, but still the right thing to do...

Yes a perfect game is the holy grail of MLB pitching but can anyone here name even five of the pitchers that have thrown them (without Googling)?

Perspective.

Taz's Master 06-03-2010 04:13 AM

Jim Bunning, Catfish Hunter, David Cone, David Wells, Don Larsen.

But the best is Harvey Haddix.

Shouldn't be part of the game. The shuffelboard openings are there for umps as well as pitchers who feel they got the shaft.

I bet this does bring on the replay. Each teamshould get get 2 per game,or series. Damn shame this has happened. I wouldn't dought the comish steps in.

Porsche-O-Phile 06-03-2010 05:04 AM

Bud Selig? HAHAHA!!! That's a good one.

He's completely useless as a commissioner. Same guy who called a tie in the All-Star game a few years ago.

Contrast his style with that of Roger Goodell (NFL) and you'll see why the NFL enjoys such huge popularity with its fan base and is regarded as being responsive and in touch with contemporary issues important to fans, players, coaches, etc. Unlike MLB.

I hate what happened, but I would also hate to see the instant replay introduced in baseball. It would make an already painfully slow game (primarily due to pitchers) even slower.

You may be right, but tell that to the pitcher who now has to tell a different story to his grandkids, and to the fans, especially the kids, who were robbed of an event that would have been imoprtant to them. (I can't beileve I just said, "Think of the children.")

And what's the matter with you? Don't you recall that huge scoring gaffe at the '89 Shuffleboard World Finals in which Morton Finklestein was cheated out of his place in the Pantheon of shuffleboard greats? A travesty!

Watching that clip make me feel sick. I feel bad for the pitcher and almost as bad for the umpire.

Baseball is a joke and this is just another in a long list of examples. I'd say the blown call that cost KC a World Series to St. Louis was the worst call ever. I believe Don Denkinger was his name. In this day and age to let a call stand that everyone knows is wrong is baseball at it's best. Maybe this will at least get baseball to move into the 20th century.

Uh, that was the other way around.

Roy Halladay just threw one a few days ago. A shame to see such an incredible feat be lost to a simple mistake, and for there be no way to correct it. At least if the catcher thinks the homeplate ump made a bad call he can appeal it.

Well at least I remembered the umps name. :p

Gotta love Gallaragga's face when the call was made. "Safe?...really?"

Replay helped save the Flyer's bacon last night.

Yep. I don't watch baseball, but my wife does, so sometimes I get stuck watching a game.

While the perfect game is deserved, the bad ruling on the field should not be reversed. Doing so would set two bad precedents:

1) Umpires can be overruled by the MLB. This would be bad because teams would start lobbying to get the results they want and it would eventually destroy the integrity of the game.

2) Results of a game can be changed after the fact. The FIA likes to do this in Formula 1, and it hurts that sport. Correct or incorrect, the results of a game (or race) should be set in stone when the game (or race) is over.

Super_Dave_D 06-03-2010 07:41 AM

Come on - it was close!!!!!:confused: Did you see the batters expression? I thought he was gonna argue the call!

I think all involved acted with great dignity after the fact....Gallaragga especially.
