where to buy new kitchen cabinets?

I assume the Home Depot/Lowes stuff is pretty comparable. I'm prepared to spend some money here, but what troubles me is spending thousands on cheapo stuff with particle board shelves.

What's the best way to get a good value on kitchen cabinets? I have a modest home (not a show home) and I'd hope to keep my kitchen cabinet budget about $2K if possible. It's a small kitchen...half dozen upper cabinets, some drawers, lazy susan, etc.

Any ideas?

I had good success with the products from Ikea for a house we remodeled for a quick sale.

I seem to remember the whole kitchen was about $1k.
I think I have some pictures.

Martin,
Go to Tharp Cabinets down in Loveland. They are in the east side of town, right off of Hwy 34. 1246 N. Denver Ave., just east of the Home Depot, I think.

We built our house 5 years ago, and this company does Excellent work.
Can't recommend 'em enough.

I can't recall the exact pricing as it was all wrapped up in the house cost.

Good luck with the project.

Craig

I will never again have mass-produced cabinetry. It isn't much more to have them made by a high-volume local cabinet maker, but the fit and finish will make the difference.

Completely agree with kaisen. Check with a carpenter/cabinet maker and get a quote.

Precisely why I recommended Tharp Cabinets. While they are a local factory, their work is custom quality. You go an pick what you want, what wood, what style, what finish, etc. and then they schedule your cabinets to be built. They are not mass produced and you do not buy what they have already built.
Give 'em a look/see Martin. You won't be disappointed.

Here's an IKEA kitchen I installed in our cottage in January of 2007. It's now going on three years and no issues other than the cheap lazy susan hardware.

Total IKEA cost was about $2,100 including 6% MI sales tax.

We bought RTA (ready to assemble) through interstock.com I think that was the site/ Very very nice quality they were 100% maple ply wood with solid maple face frames and doors. I would suggest that to anyone looking only 10 minutes apiece to assemble.

there are sorta 3 levels

mass prod. stuff in a sotre

semi-custom

and custom

figure out how much you have to spend & go from there

you can DIY if you are good in the wood (shop) but it is a lot of labor to do right

installation is also important - could easily be $2k for that if done right

Last kitchen I did, A local cabinet shop was far cheaper than Lowe's or Home Defect.

Better price, better selection of what we wanted, much better quality. No comparison.

Agree again. You will absolutely not find quality at Home Depot or Lowes. Do it once, do it right, and you might be surprised at the price.

I have Ikea kitchen cabinets. They came with the house when we bought it. They look OK and are functional. But obviously the quality of the materials and hardware is not super duper. Somewhat chintzy. Admittedly, I have no idea how long this stuff has been in this house. This is one of the first things I want to remodel in our house.

YOu know, I have to be fair, some of the higher end homo depot stuff are really OK, but the style and slection still has a long way to go. Real great quality and choices do not exist there or most home centers. Heck, even the local custom cabinet man. I have seem some corner cutting crap come out of some of our local, so call, custom shops.

Hey, we talked about a year ago on a remodel I did. It was my first flip. I promise you some before and after pics. I will dig it out for you soon. Sorry I complete forgot.

The off the shelf, HD and Lowes stuff is crappy. But their custom order stuff isnt that bad. As far as Ikea, Ive done a few Ikea Kitchens( including my own). Not the highest quality, but I have seen alot worse.
