Curious how many here are self-employed

OK.....I'm looking at all the people currently active on this board during "work" hours and can't help but wonder if a lot are self-employed (that or have great bosses!). I myself am and we are very slow today. (Hence, me pissing away my time and yours by getting you to read this.) I am guessing if we are willing to take on the responsibility (risk) of owning a car that is $$$$ to repair, and sometimes a bit more temperamental than your average Honda, that we would be the Freudian poster children of an average person that risk going into business for themselves. Just curious. (I think I am going to go scrub the office toilet or something.)

Yeah, I sign my own paycheck too. Pretty quiet in my world also today. Done nothing but surf the internet all morning.

It's good to be the boss!

Don't work too hard! Marty

Me too! And with DSL I can just leave the Board on all day!

I'm self-employed too as a biomedical engineer/product design consultant.....so far so good, no complaints.

Amost self employed. I'm working on the big buyout :-) Hello 993!

R22tech 12-19-2001 12:02 PM

Self-employed here too: www.allbrandservice.net
Also, A2000 Air Corp.

I don't need to tell you that business is soft due to the weather this year. It has been nice concentrating on the P-car though. Anyone want to buy an ultra-high-end central air purifier/filtration unit( like the one's being used to clean out the Anthrax)? I can sell them below cost right now-you have to install them yourselves or find an HVAC company to do it for you.

P.S. SORRY ABOUT THE "PLUG"- THIS POST GOT ME THINKING ABOUT HOW LITTLE WORK I'VE BEEN DOING!!!

not self employed

Nope... not self employed...but I have a good boss...UNCLE SAM! I work in an ICU in an ARMY hospital. The uncle has recently bought us 1.5ghz P3's with a nice T1 line for our enjoyment..uh..I mean, uh....work! We have 2 patients and 2 nurses (today) and they are quite stable ...and while they rest...I get to surf. I spend lots of time on this BBS and I can communicate with all my online friends with Yahoo and MSN messengers. That is one of the "perks" of working here. In our 4 bed unit...there are no less than 4 computers! One of which has our radiology monitors...$15,000 apiece X 2 that we can surf the net (unofficially) on. So if I'm at work...I'm usually on here! Brian

Yep, self employed. Military support & export. Skip from project to project with alot of off time in between (like now).

I'm thinking of making a change though as I'm getting bored after 16 years in this biz. If only I'd learned something useful....

Drago 12-19-2001 12:30 PM

Sort of self employed...I'm a contract structural designer for a very large commercial aircraft company that provides me with a nice fast connect...at least while the system is up and running...

beepbeep 12-19-2001 12:39 PM

I'm both self-employed and employed as systems architect...working from home quite a lot. (Un?)fortunately I don't have working hours, just deadlines...

Pelican is good place to rest my mind on...

Municipal gov't employee.

This place slows to a snail's pace during the winter months.

Jack Olsen 12-19-2001 12:52 PM

'Self-employed' is one of those terms that seems to contradict itself. Somebody has to pay you, right?

I guess the distinction is being an hourly employee or contracting yourself out by the individual job.

I do the latter, which means I can check the board any time. The downside is that I'm only putting off work I need to get done until later.

self employed

Self employed. This is my retail store - www.newtownbike.com
If I get a tough customer or are stressed I can get on the Porsche board and get away so to speak.

Self-employed, but my wife has A Real Job, which makes it easy. (She's the editor of a women's magazine.) I'm a writer--travel, aviation, automotive. Got an M5 in the driveway right now, just finished with a Cadillac CTS, coming in the next month or two are a Jaguar X-Type, Infiniti I-35, Lexus IS300 SportWagon, Ford Focus ZTW wagon, Mercedes C320 wagon...and I gotta go drive an acquaintance's F550 Ferrari in a couple of weeks (the black one that is on the cover of the current R&T).

My boss is the greatest. Yeah, I'm self-employed. How else could I find time and money to restore my mistress. A lot of hard work getting to this point though. My site is:www.profitprinter.com if anybody cares.

Self-employed and loving it for the past 16 years or so. Forensic structural engineer - a fancy way of saying we figure out why buildings fall down! -- Curt

A little of both here. I work out of my home in pharmaceutical sales and also have a side business which supports all of my addictions. Wife also has a good job, but her goal is to build up the side business to the point where she can quit her job and manage it. Right now, that's about 2 years out.

Michael, looks like I used to have to the same machine. What a pain in the butt to clean, and then the drinks were either too frozen or too liquid. Gave up and went Island Oasis.
You've got a great idea:)

You Betcha I'm self employed--- I am a Real Estate appraiser, I am actually in Seattle attending a 1031 Exchange class this week and dealing with a sloooww connection to the internet.
I went down to the regional VA office today only to learn that they are closing and consolidating the west coast offices to Denver. This internet thing is taking its toll on our industry. More Computers less people.
