Happy 16th, son, here's a new Shelby

That was May 17. This was June 7, across from my house, not my car that got hit. The driver asked the also 16 year old passenger if she wanted to see a fishtail, she didn't know what that was and said yes, and below is the result. I think it ended up being a five count ticket, it was after 11 and if you are 16 you can't have an unrelated 16 year old passenger. He’d already been warned about that once, the cop let him go on it.

Sounds like he didn't get the fish or the "tail".

Giving most 16 year old drivers a car like that is like giving a child a loaded .357 magnum......someone is going to get hurt.

i did dumb stuff when i was young but never with the assistance of a $30,000 gift from dad.....

I've let my kids drive some quick cars......In a L A R G E parking lot.

When I was selling my Fastback a Dad called me and wanted to buy it for his son.

I told him that I bet he loved his son very much, he said yes.

I told him that I would need to see the kid's casket prior to selling it to him !

After that hee asked why, I told him that I would lay $$$$ that the kid would wreck it in a big way!

I lost a customer, but I sleep at night! (and the car's safe, sadly parked in a barn, not seeing 1,000 miles a year )

When I was in high school in Naperville, one of my classmate's family won the lottery.

Each of the kids were given $1 million. I think there were 5 kids, but I only knew two of them. Both of them (brother and sister) went out and bought Mustangs. The sister was only 14 at the time. It sat in the driveway until she got her learner's permit.

The brother had his Mustang for six months. (A '95 GT IIRC.) He got bored with it, and decided to crash it into the side of a building to see if the air bags would go off. Then he walked to a dealership and bought himself a new Blazer.

My point?

I've seen plenty of kids handed expensive and/or fast cars. Only about half of them made it through high school alive.

Not sure it's a Shelby from the pics...everything from v-6 on up can be found with stripes & hood scoops. Ahhh, but it's a 4.6. Lemme know when a kid totals a new 5.0...might be interested in the engine & transmission, plus the computer stuff of course.

It's a Shelby.

One of my friends actually said, "I wonder how long that car's going to last?" It's hard to tell from the picture, but it's probably totalled.

A bud went to one of those military academies in VA for his high school years ('66-69)... it was either Fork Union or Staunton... can't remember. He told me a lot of guys got 'Vettes, 427 Cobras, or Shelby Mustangs for graduation.

Quite a few of 'em were dead within a year.

My 23 yr old got a Porsche 914 that he paid half of. He was 16 at the time. Under powered and over braked superior handling. 2 seats. it was a 4,000 dollar car. He did well in it. Got a call from a friend one day. "hey saw your boy blasting down the stret a few minutes ago".

Oh Thanks for the call dude, and that was me in the car. Small town.

I was at a driving school and there was a 16yo kid there with his dad and a 5L mustang, his dad said he wanted the son to learn how to control the car, Schools also teach that racing is only for the track, I thought this was a real good idea by the Dad. Our local Drag strip has free night for kids to race their cars, they sit through a 1 hour saftey meeting, then its helmets on and line em up, this is also a great idea too, gets it outta a kids blood and maybe builds membership, these free nights are always well attended

Predictable results, parents must want the kid out of the picture. They should be in jail.

IIRC some rich folks round here bought there high school boy a Mustang Cobra... crashed... bought him a M3... crashed+people died.

If I were rich with a high school boy... I would buy him a VW diesel.

Pretty simple for me. My dad told me that if I wanted a car, I could buy a piece of crap. If I wanted a cool car, I would have to be resourceful. Learned every facet of how an old car works from the ages of 15-18. Worked to pay for parts, paint, and materials. Sawzalled parts cars apart, learned to weld, learned to sew interiors, learned to mix paint, learned to paint, etc. Spent every night in the garage from the time homework was done, until it was bedtime. (I still can hear Delilah After Dark...she was the only radio station that came in on the shop radio).

Had a bada$$ car when I was done, learned how to do it, and had respect for the machinery.

The initial car I paid $300 for:

The car afterwards, for my senior year of HS:

I graduated high school 10 years ago this week. I still have the TR, and drive it everyday. Took it out for dinner last night, and then went on a 50 mile cruise out in the country. I think I've put probably 50K miles on it in the last 10 years.
