Any lawnmower repair guys?

Hi,

My 7 year old Honda mower just recently got stuck with the drive wheels engaged. I've tried working the cable but it doesn't give.

I just recently swapped in a new blade- but can't see how that would be related.

Anything else I can try or should I just take it in?

I'm not specifically up on honda, but sounds like a bad gearbox, broken tooth or something. Most mower gearboxes are fairly simple...

and believe it or not, on many brands, the gears are made of plastic.

Paul,

Robert Coates (on this forum) works (or used to anyway) in that industry. I'd PM him.

Honda mower guy here....

What model is it? Look for an ID tag on the mower deck behind the engine. Should start with the letters "HR" and then more characters.

What is the exact symptom...the rear wheels continue to turn even when the drive clutch is released?

Could be a bent/binding drive clutch cable. Cable problems are the most common. Call me if you'd like to discuss. (678) 339-2588 weekdays EST.

HRT Push Mower

I had a Honda HRT-216 that had a bad transmission after ~ 4 years. Good mower, peice of crap design on the tranny.

A new trans is around $125; Honda doesn't sell parts, just the complete assembly. Its made to fail over time. It contains oil to cool the "clutch" - a plastic and metal friction disk. As the axel seals wear out, the oil leaks out and the plastic parts melt; either locking up the wheels or allowing the disks to slip.

Good luck,

Gordo

Yes and no. Back in the late 90s, Honda contracted with Deere to build a few (red) lawn tractors, and they had a magnetic blade clutch (PTO). While I did write the shop manual, I don't recall offhand if the clutch assembly could be serviced, beyond the basic "hook up a battery to it" testing.

See if you can borrow a Deere shop manual for your specific model...they are very detailed and will take you down to the last washer in most documents I've seen. There's got to be a Deere discussion forum out there too.

Oh hi- I didn't realize you were local!

It's a Harmony II, about 7 years old. I'll check the ID tag when I get home.

The front wheels are engaged at all times- the lever has gone a little limp it seems as well. It feels like the action on it is different- no tension.

Come to think of it- could this have been caused by glancing the brand new blade off of a brick? Not that I did that. Just wondering if that type of misuse could cause this problem. Heh.

I'll call you- thanks!
