Bad Lieutenant etc.

If you like black comedy, go see this film. It's terrific fun.

Directed by Werner Herzog and starring Nicholas Cage. That could of course be a recipe for disaster—particularly given the inane title of the film, which in full is "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans". I mean who TF thought that up?

But the film is quite wonderfully dark—and as a bonus it co-stars Eva Mendes as the bad cops girlfriend. Think Coen Brothers on crack.

Herzog's look at the sleazy side of New Orleans from a European perspective is sublime IMO. And Cage is great. (And he needs your money!)

I'll have to give it a look. I loved the original when it came out, somehow I can't see anyone other than Abel Ferrara making that movie.

Also, Nick Cage is not a big draw for me these days. I used to love him when he was starting out through about Raising Arizona, (+Leaving Las Vegas), somehow he seemed to "lose the plot" somewhere along the way with his acting roles and career. I actually studied acting with him many years ago in a small but well-regarded studio, we did many scenes together and he was always terrific. He was still Nicolas Coppola in those days. I thought he was insane for changing his name but it worked out ok for him.

I agree with you about Cage. He did lose the plot. But I think he may have found it again with this film.

I thought the movie was horrible. I stopped watching it about halfway. Too unrealistic, David

Question: Have all of you guys seen the original? (With Harvey Keitel). It's about as far from "realistic" as it gets but it's a good watch. It's basically an art film. It's hilarious, if you have a sick sense of humor.

I can see how a real cop might be offended by it but on the other hand, many LEOs have an appreciation for gallows humor that might over-rule that for an hour or two. The thought of a real, actual cop like HK's character is appalling and frightening. To Ferrara's credit, he never has him even go to the station or take a real police radio call once in the whole movie. He only uses the radio to place sports bets, IIRC.

This is the first Bad Lieutenant movie I'm talking about. Haven't seen the remake that is the subject of this thread but I'd bet the house that it's basically the same story.

I like many cop movies, but this one was so "off the mark" that I thought it was ridiculous. I don't mind when the plot is sensationalized, but to see one cop be able to do that many unrealistic things is silly to me. Plus, Nick Cage is not a believable tough guy to me. Just my thoughts.......

Long time no talk Denis! I hope all is well my friend, David

Nick Cage has as much acting ability as money in his bank account, 00000000000

All is well in the City of Angels. I hope you recover soon Snipe. On a side note, I saw a bunch of threads on "spoons" and thought they were about silverware.......

No more highjacking......My hearts go out to family and friends of our lost officer. Despite personal feelings about pursuits, a young man lost his life making our society a little safer, David

I agree. It's a tragedy that the man is dead. And a tragedy that the other six year old girl is dead as well.

Life is one big never ending tragedy, in so many ways.

I watched Bad Lieutenant over the weekend; Pretty disappointed, and I think it's because of Cage, and the fact that I was comparing him to Harvey Keitel throughout the film.

(And it's too bad, I used to like NC. He should have changed agents after Gone in 60 seconds.)
