Seattle's finest at work saving the public

Is jaywalking really that much of a problem in Seattle? Nice right to the nose.

Police: Officer under review after punching incident caught on camera - CNN.com

Roosterrusek 06-16-2010 12:32 PM

Well it is a problem at that intersection, and there is a totally usable overpass walkway thing people are supposed to use.

Now to the hit....TOTALLY justifiable. Rule #1 when dealing with police, be calm, comply and NEVER PUT YOUR ATTITUDINAL HANDS ON A COP, discussion over.

Cop has a gun and a taser, and is trying to get jaywalking girl under control and her stupid friend decides to fight off the cop? What the hell did she expect and who the hell does she think she is? She's lucky she did not get tazed or shot....

And then there will be the obligatory he shouldn't have hit her...well he had to subdue her and keep her from wrestling wih him. 2 angry gorls wrestle with cop...gun or tazer skids away, dumbazz picks it up and points it at someone thinking that it'll not lead to more violence.

Let's try this again...

1 - You can stand up for yourself but when talking to a cop, be CALM.

2 - Cops are nervous enough...comply in a reasonable fashion.

3 - Lay your hands on a cop, get 1 free pass to jail.

They escalated it, and if jaywalker girl followed the above steps AND REMEMBER SHE WAS BREAKING THE LAW, then she might have even gotten off with a warning. Now she'll think she was the one assaulted because she choose to ignore #3

Look I have no love for the cops, but there are unbreakable rules...these are only 3 of them and both those "ladies" broke all of them.

Gogar 06-16-2010 12:38 PM

I'm surprised he didn't shoot her.

Jim Richards 06-16-2010 12:41 PM

In the city, jaywalking can be a problem. I almost hit a guy who stepped into the street in front of me. There are people out there who really, really want to compete for the Darwin Award.

Scooter 06-16-2010 12:47 PM

This was just a complete lack of respect for the law...plain and simple. Cop's actions were entirely justifiable and by the book. End of story.

Jeff Higgins 06-16-2010 01:04 PM

I hate defient, jaywalking smart asses.

There were a bunch of defiant, dumbass homies standing, yes standing right smack in the middle of a Seattle street one day some years ago, silently daring people to do anything about it. I saw a couple of cars in front of me stop for them. They just stood there and made the cars go into the oncoming lane to go around them.

Me? I was in my '71 FJ40, which with 600,000 miles on the clock (and a good number of them in our NW woods), was looking a little rough around the edges by then. The "nothing to lose" look, if you know what I mean. So, about half a block away, I floor it. Dumb ass homies just stand there. I was fully prepared to just plow on through them, and I think that finally dawned on them when I was about ten feet away with it still floored. The whole mob dove out of the way. I'm sure I clipped an ankle or an elbow or two or three. I could tell because some of them were limping on my second pass.

That's right, I slammed on the brakes and came skidding to a stop as fast as I could, turning around in the next roundabout. This time they were cagey enough to remember to stay the hell out of the street, so I had to bounce up on the sidewalk to chase a couple. I was laughing like some deranged maniac by now, having more fun than I had had in a very long time. I was just sure I was either going to jail or getting shot, or both. Alas, all these tough guys could think of at the time was running. I bet they are still talking about me.

I don't know what gets into me sometimes. I'd have smacked her, too.

mossguy 06-16-2010 01:16 PM

Good for you, Jeff!!

Best,
Tom

Rick Lee 06-16-2010 01:43 PM

What did this have to do with jaywalking? A girl assaulted a cop. He defended himself.

A930Rocket 06-16-2010 01:45 PM

I suspect this wasn't her first time dealing with the police...

ODDJOB UNO 06-16-2010 01:46 PM

that was TRULY A BEAUTIFUL THANG TO BEHOLD! damn that must have felt good!

serves her right hope she gets charged with assault because she is UGLY! assault with a deadly face! assault with a fat azz! assault with being DOUBLE BUTT UGLY!

congrats to the cop!

peppy 06-16-2010 01:51 PM

I say a little OC spray goes a long way. I did notice the guys didn't jump right in to help the girls. They probably had better sense.

m21sniper 06-16-2010 01:52 PM

Wow mr. cop, straight sucker punching a GIRL to the jaw...

That's a REAL MAN right there.

(who could not even knock down a girl with a dead sucker punch to the jaw)

Don't they teach these dumbasses how to do a simple wrist lock? Elbow lock? Finger lock? Head lock?

The cop has to resort to sucker punching a woman in the face? (actually, the way that ******* punches, i guess he did have to resort to that).

It would have been great if all the brothers right there jumped his ass and fked him up real good, if you ask me.

EDIT TO ADD: I do not blame the cop for resorting to force, but i do blame him for immediately escalating the situation to fisticuffs. Dude....it's a girl.

This guy is CLEARLY one of those punks that got beat up or picked on in school every day because he fights like a girl, and who only became a cop so he could bully others with his badge and gun.

Pepper spray works.
Wrist & various other moves work.

At least he didn't beat her over the head with his stick.

This would have never made the news in Atlanta if the girl was white and the cop was black.

JEFF! awesome.

something similar happened to me. my friend and i were on street bikes. we split lanes to the front. two gang bangers, pants drooped down past their arses..huge shirts, boxer shorts showing...walk in front..crossing the street. they took their sweet time. strutting, dancing. our light turned green. they kept dancing, trying to hold traffic hostage. my friend is your kindred spirit. very short fuse, zero tolerance for stupid schit. bike reved up..and launched!! james stuck his foot out, placed it squarely on one hoodlums butt. james literally picked him up and punted him out into the middle of Market street, san francisco. we were on van ness. i was half horrified and entertained. the guy got up swinging blindly..at no one, james was GONE! i putted past him..the entire intersection erupted in cheers. it was equally awesome. not potentially deadly like your move tho :)

I bet it was also one of the most satisfying.

Some dirty whore did that to me last night, strolling in front of my car AFTER the light turned green. I just let her take her sweet time, and after she'd passed, i called her a "filthy disease ridden whore."

LOL...

Dave L 06-16-2010 05:18 PM

the cop bugging pedestrians for jaywalking is dumb but for them to try to physically resist and fight with the cop is stupidity of a monumental level.

m21sniper 06-16-2010 06:25 PM

This entire incident was stupid from start to finish IMO.

stealthn 06-16-2010 07:20 PM

Well punching her was kind of stupid but not unjustified. First rule with a cop should always be: taken them to the ground - hard.

fintstone 06-16-2010 08:28 PM

His only mistake was not following up with an uppercut or a couple of body blows..

masraum 06-16-2010 08:45 PM

When you resist a cop physically (like the main kid that he was trying to arrest), or assault a cop physically (like her friend in the pink that got popped), you should expect SOMETHING to be coming your way. Farking stupid kids. What the hell were they thinking?

I don't expect to ever get hit by a cop. That's because I cooperate with them. What those kids were doing was REALLY stupid. As a cop, surrounded by kids, one wrestling with you, and another shoving you (and more standing around, some of them male), I suspect you need to do something to get the situation under control.

What would the comments have been if the cop had gotten shoved and continued to be passive, then kids get more brazen, maybe beat the crap out of the cop or even kill him.

Screw that, if you put yourself in a position, you'd better be ready to deal with the consequences.

Superman 06-16-2010 09:05 PM

I was listening to this controversy this morning on a radio show, while driving. Based on the simple fact that the officer was asaulted first, and was ALONE with a loaded gun on his hip, I was completely sold on the notion that the officer was free to do what he felt necessary to regain control of the situation. And I'm a liberal. And I support police officers 120%.

So imagine my sense of validation when a caller pointed out that a bystander had a revolver in his hand. Check out the video. Revolver. Pointed at that altercation.

'nuff said.

Superman 06-16-2010 09:07 PM

If I take a swing at a police officer, what would you expect would happen to me? I would hope to only get a punch in the face.

Oh, and one more thing. Jeff.......we need to talk.

speedracing944 06-16-2010 09:08 PM

I think it was a cell phone taking vid and not a revolver. It could have been easily mistaken for one though and a life could have been lost.

Don't point things at cops while they are doing their job.

Speedy:)

A person can only take so much. It was a long video that showed a lot of abuse put toward the cop. I feel for the guy.

Of course, if this happened in L.A., the woman would now be driving a Rolls.

GH85Carrera 06-17-2010 06:25 AM

The cop was 100% justified to punch her. He showed restraint.

Just because she is female is no reason to hold back. She deserved the same treatment as anyone, male or female.

Porsche-poor 06-17-2010 10:17 AM

According to the latest news these two are not saints and one has been arrested before for assulting an officer the other for robbery. The one line in the news that kills me is "what if it were your kid?" Well my son has enough brains to respect the officer for one and two if he didn't I would hope that all he got a was a punch and not shot.

Jeff Higgins 06-17-2010 11:14 AM

a follow-up article in the Seattle Times today says auditors have had lingering concerns over police behavior with regards to jaywalking and other minor offenses.

Pflaumer noted that citizens "often do not show officers respect or attention" when confronted over minor offenses.

"When they verbally challenge or disregard orders given, it often leads officers to respond more harshly than warranted," she wrote.
I'm curious what the options are when the citizens don't show the officers respect or attention over minor offenses? Either get physical or back down? I assume/hope there's more to it than that. I think that for some citizens, words and talk would be useless.

I disagree. It's important for officers to be highly competent in the use of tasers. They should use these opportunities to hone their skills. WTF was that woman thinking?
